About the Role
The Plant Leader is a critical leadership position accountable for the effective operation of Howmet’s Redditch Plant. This multifaceted role requires strong financial acumen, operational excellence, lean manufacturing principles, commercial awareness, and exceptional leadership responsibilities. Successfully candidates will demonstrate proven expertise in fast-paced manufacturing, production, and operations environments, with a track record of driving profitability, process improvement, and high-performance team cultures.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Growth
- Develop the annual revenue and manufacturing plan in collaboration with senior stakeholders (risk, planning, quality) to optimise resource deployment, meet production targets, and align with customer delivery requirements.
- Drive financial performance, growth, and operational excellence—focusing on cost reduction, efficiency, and profitability across production, planning, distribution, customer service, and logistics.
- Establish and promote a ** Continuous Improvement mindset** (lean manufacturing principals) and implement structured initiatives (e.g., kaizen, rapid improvement events).
- Partner with Purchasing to establish vendor alliances that support quality and pricing objectives, ensuring supplier performance is audited and managed proactively.
Operational & Performance Management
- Oversee all operational performance metrics—safety, quality, cost, production delivery, resource utilisation, and employee engagement. It is critical to ensure these are achieved to strict standards.
- Ensure full compliance with:
- EHS standards (investigation of incidents, risk mitigation, and promotion of a supportive safety culture).
- Aerospace quality standards (root cause analysis of non-quality events, customer claims, and audits).
- Customer satisfaction (timely resolution of returns, claims, and delivery issues in alignment with Howmet’s commercial interests).
Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead, inspire, and motivate a diverse, multi-disciplinary team (including production, engineering, logistics, and customer-facing roles) with a focus on open communication, empowerment and performance accountability.
- Engage, develop, and retain high-performance talent through coaching, succession planning, and proactive HR initiatives.
- Address underperformance or behaviours through constructive dialogue, continuous development, and timely corrective measures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
