About SpareRoom

SpareRoom, launched in 2004, has helped over 10 million people worldwide find homes to share and connect with great roommates. We believe that:

"Living with the right people beats living alone."

Our mission is simple: create happier flatshares.

As a modern family business, we are 100% owned by our founders and directors. This keeps our focus centred on users and fosters a culture of contributing humble, energetic individuals who get things done.

We are excited to grow our Platform team, as we’ve recently completed our migration from a datacenter to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and are embracing cloud-native infrastructure. This allows us to build a more scalable, resilient, and efficient platform. We’re now looking for a passionate and experienced Platform Engineer to help us optimise our infrastructure, improve security, and instil best practices for scalable, cloud-native solutions.

About the Role

As a Platform Engineer at SpareRoom, you will:

  • Ensure the security, reliability, and performance of our platform and infrastructure.
  • Design and maintain scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and platform tooling on GCP.
  • Automate and continuously improve infrastructure and operational workflows.
  • Collaborate with the core development team to design and deliver platform solutions supporting product development.
  • Build and maintain self-service platform capabilities, enabling teams to deploy and operate services independent of extensive support.
  • Support the development of high engineering standards, including best practices, tooling, and comprehensive documentation.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (paid) to help monitor and maintain platform reliability and availability.

Responsibilities

Your work will intersect with several key areas:

  • Infrastructure & Tooling
    • Deploy and manage cloud-native solutions on GCP (extensive experience essential).
    • Lead initiatives to improve scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
    • Implement automation pipelines for deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
    • Contribute to and maintain self-service platform tooling.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
