Contract position (6 months likelihood of extension) London / Edinburgh / Remote Inside IR35 Competitive day rate

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced OpenShift Platform Engineer to join our OpenShift platform team on a contract basis, providing critical backfill support.

The role focuses on the operational management, support, and continuous improvement of our enterprise OpenShift platform running on x86 infrastructure, within a highly regulated financial services environment. The successful candidate will be hands-on, operationally strong, and proactive, with a solid SRE mindset to enhance platform reliability, performance, and user experience for internal application teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and support Red Hat OpenShift clusters hosted on x86 infrastructure
  • Provide day-to-day operational support for the OpenShift platform, ensuring high availability and performance, alongside BAU maintenance
  • Implement and enhance automation across platform operations (provisioning, scaling, patching, incident response)
  • Maintain and improve platform reliability, observability, and resilience, using SRE principles
  • Contribute to incident, problem, and change management processes, adhering to regulated environment standards
  • Partner with application teams to support onboarding, troubleshooting, and platform usage
  • Diagnose and resolve complex platform and application issues across the stack, including:
    • Compute
    • Storage
    • Networking
    • Containers
  • Work closely with infrastructure teams supporting VMware virtualised environments
  • Ensure compliance with security, audit, and regulatory requirements
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation and operational runbooks

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Skills

  • Proven experience managing OpenShift on x86-based infrastructure and container technologies
  • Strong focus on incident management, root cause analysis, and recovery
  • Experience with VMware vSphere/virtualised infrastructure environments
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across:
    • Networking
    • Storage
    • Container orchestration
    • Platform performance
  • Demonstrable experience in production operations and support environments
  • Experience supporting internal application teams consuming platform services
  • Ability to work under pressure in critical service environments
  • Experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, scripting)
  • Competence in at least one scripting/programming language (e.g., Python, Bash, Go)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling

Domain Experience

  • Proven experience working within financial services or similarly regulated environments
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Governance, risk, and compliance requirements
    • Change control and audit practices
    • Secure platform operations

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to SRE practices (SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, observability)
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools
  • Familiarity with hybrid or multi-cloud environments
  • Knowledge of security best practices in container platforms
  • Red Hat certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, OpenShift certification) are advantageous

Soft Skills

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams (platform, infrastructure, applications)
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
