Platform Engineer
About the Time & Frequency Platform Engineer Role
Our world-leading Time & Frequency department is seeking a Platform Engineer with strong scripting and automation expertise. This is an exceptional opportunity to join the global authority in precision timing, shaping UK digital infrastructure at a critical moment.
The Opportunity
Backed by a £180m government investment, we are developing a world-first resilient timings distribution capability—a critical backup to GPS and satellite systems, which are vulnerable to solar storms, jamming, and spoofing. The project will underpin essential services including:
- Telecommunications
- Online banking
- Emergency response
- Transport networks
- Data-driven operations
These services form the backbone of modern society, and your leadership will ensure they remain secure, reliable, and resilient even if satellite-based timing fails.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality code, automation, and runbooks for server build and software support
- Continuously improve your technical expertise, stay ahead of advancements, and communicate growth opportunities with your team
- Demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills, contributing effectively as part of an agile team
- Maintain a security-first mindset in your work
About You
To excel in this role, you’ll need:
Essential
- Operating system knowledge—familiarity with Windows or Linux, with a willingness to expand into both
- Scripting and automation expertise (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, Packer, Ansible, Terraform, Docker)
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science or a related field

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
