Department: Technology

Location: Home based, UK

Reports to: Head of Engineering

Hours: 37.5 per week

Salary: (Depending on experience)

Role Overview

This is a new role, and a pioneering one. We are investing in platform engineering as a discipline. You won’t just be keeping the lights on, but actively improving how our engineers work: faster feedback loops, better tooling, smoother development workflows, and a foundation that scales with the business.

As the Platform Engineer at Cambridge Spark, you will work closely with our existing infrastructure engineer and directly with the Head of Engineering to shape this capability from the ground up. It is a hands-on technical role; you will be writing code and building things, not just advising on them.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and evolve our GCP-based platform alongside the existing infrastructure engineer, increasing resilience and reducing single points of failure
  • Establish developer experience as a discipline — audit where engineering time is lost, and systematically improve it through better tooling, automation, and process
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, local development environments, and internal tooling that make the engineering team faster and more confident
  • Introduce infrastructure-as-code and platform engineering best practices where they are missing or immature
  • Collaborate across engineering, product, and curriculum teams to understand where platform limitations are creating friction
  • Contribute to our AI tooling adoption — we are an AI company and expect our engineering practice to reflect that
  • Work with the Head of Engineering to set technical direction for the platform, with genuine influence over decisions

Candidate Specification:

Technical

  • Solid, hands-on GCP experience — you know your way around the platform and can operate independently within it
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent) and a strong opinion on why it matters
  • A track record of improving CI/CD pipelines in a meaningful way — not just maintaining them
  • Familiarity with the developer experience space: local dev tooling, observability, internal platforms, or similar
  • Comfortable across the platform stack rather than deeply specialised in a single area — we are not at a scale that rewards narrow expertise
  • Exposure to Python-based or data-heavy engineering environments is a plus given our domain

Ways of Working

  • Generalist instinct: you reach for the right tool rather than your favourite one, and you are comfortable operating across a broad remit
  • Pioneer mindset: you have seen good platform and DX culture somewhere, whether that’s in a large best-in-class org, or a smaller company where you’ve built it from scratch. You want to build it somewhere new — you do not need a playbook handed to you
  • Self-starter: if you see a problem, you just fix it if it’s small. If the fix is large or high-risk, you communicate what the problem is, and why it needs careful design.
  • Resilient: you thrive when building something new, where tactical priorities change but we have a consistent end goal.
  • Collaborative but confident: you build trust with peers through competence and consistency, and you hold your ground when you need to
  • Pragmatic about AI: you are curious about and actively engaged with AI-assisted development; this is a meaningful part of how we expect the discipline to evolve
  • Communicative: you surface problems early, document your thinking, and keep stakeholders appropriately informed without being prompted

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What This Role Is Not:

  • It is not a people management role — you will not have direct reports
  • It is not a specialist infrastructure role — if pure SRE or cloud ops is what you want, this is probably not the right fit
  • It is not a big-company environment — we are a bootstrapped edtech business; you will need to be comfortable with resource constraints and wearing multiple hats

Why This Role:

  • Genuine greenfield opportunity to establish platform engineering and developer experience as disciplines at a company that is serious about AI
  • Direct access to and influence with senior leadership
  • A stable, values-driven business with a social impact mission in education and skills
  • The autonomy to do the role properly, not just execute a predetermined roadmap

Company Benefits:

  • Pension with 4% matched contributions, opportunity to opt into salary sacrifice scheme
  • 25 days holiday + Flexi bank holidays + 1 day off on your birthday
  • A day for volunteering
  • Enhanced Maternity and Paternity Leave
  • Health & Wellbeing allowance of up to £30 per month
  • Annual Summer and Xmas events
  • Company socials including everything from Cambridge College formals, pub nights to team building events
  • CPD Allowance alongside quarterly reflections to ring fence time for development and growth
  • Private medical insurance and cash plan
  • Holiday buy back scheme (up to 10 days p/a)
  • Employee Assistance Programme with a dedicated company counsellor
