The Role & Responsibilities
This position is responsible for:
- Underwriting SME lending applications
- Supporting portfolio risk management
- Contributing to the development of the Playter credit platform
The role ensures credit decisions align with risk appetite while supporting efficient, scalable growth through:
- Manual underwriting
- Assisted decisioning
- Data-driven risk management
In addition, underwriters actively contribute to:
- The evolution of Playter’s credit strategy, decisioning framework, platform rules, underwriting processes, and risk controls
- Identifying opportunities to enhance credit performance, customer outcomes, operational efficiency, and automation via analysis of application, portfolio, and platform data

Key Responsibilities
Credit Underwriting
- Underwrite SME lending applications within delegated authority
- Assess financial, behavioural, and non-financial risks using:
- Manual underwriting techniques
- Platform decisioning outputs
- Exercise sound credit judgement where applications fall outside:
- Automated decisioning outcomes
- Referral criteria
- Standard lending parameters
- Balance risk, customer outcomes, commercial objectives, and risk appetite when structuring solutions
- Apply and interpret Playter credit policies, platform rules, and decisioning criteria consistently
- Escalate complex cases, emerging risks, and material concerns as required by governance
Portfolio Risk Management, Governance & Assurance
- Monitor platform performance to detect emerging credit, affordability, and behavioural risks
- Review decisioning outcomes, referral volumes, override activity, and credit performance indicators
- Support portfolio performance assessments against:
- Risk appetite
- Credit strategy
- Policy requirements
- Platform controls
- Ensure compliance with:
- Credit policies
- Decisioning frameworks
- Regulatory requirements
- Governance standards
- Participate in:
- Credit policy reviews
- Portfolio reviews
- Thematic reviews
- Lessons Learned
Platform, Policy & Decisioning Development
- Contribute to the ongoing development and optimisation of:
- Playter’s credit platform
- Decisioning framework
- Underwriting strategy
- Use application, portfolio, and performance data to identify enhancements for:
- Credit outcomes
- Customer experience
- Operational efficiency
- Automation
- Review effectiveness of:
- Platform rules, thresholds, referral criteria
- Decisioning controls

Reporting & Management Information (MI)
- Analyse trends, exceptions, and risks to support credit risk management and decision-making
- Prepare insights for governance forums, policy reviews, and strategic initiatives

- Support risk, portfolio, and decisioning metrics development and maintenance
The Person
Skills & Experience
Required:
- Strong SME lending and credit underwriting experience
- Sound knowledge of financial analysis, credit risk assessment, and lending structures
- Experience applying and interpreting credit policies, decisioning frameworks, and risk controls
Desirable:
- Experience in technology-enabled or automated lending environments
- Knowledge of the UK regulatory environment (e.g., FCA) and conduct expectations
