Associate Editor (Open-Access Medical Journal) – Temporary, UK-Based, Fully Remote A 12-month role with PLOS Medicine, a pioneer in open-access medical publishing.
About the Role
PLOS Medicine, a leading open-access medical journal, is seeking an Associate Editor to enhance its impact by evaluating high-quality research and commentary on critical global health challenges.
As part of an in-house editorial team, you will:
- Collaborate with professional editors and external advisory board members
- Assess manuscripts, manage peer review processes, and drive publication decisions
- Partner with operations and vendors to ensure smooth manuscript handling
- Foster engagement with authors, reviewers, board members, and readers
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Work & Outreach
- Guide manuscripts through rigorous peer review and decision-making, upholding best practices
- Commission and oversee Perspectives, Reviews, and other contributions (e.g., editorials)
- Collaborate with external academic editors to maintain scholarly standards
- Develop outreach strategies to engage scholarly communities

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in a research, clinical, or publishing environment (medical publishing preferred)
- Postgraduate degree required in a relevant field (PhD, MD, or equivalent strongly preferred)
- Demonstrable expertise in biological/medical sciences
Skills & Attributes
- Strong problem-solving and critical assessment abilities
- Highly organized, with a track record in fast-paced environments
- Exceptional written/oral communication (academic and public-facing)
- Adaptability to evolving scientific and editorial landscapes
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: £35,000 – £47,000 (UK) Enhanced Benefits Package:
