Plumber
Purpose: The purpose of this position is to provide for the safe occupancy of structures and for the protection of investments in real property by assuring structures meet plumbing codes, mechanical and other related standards. This is accomplished by the research and application of the BOCA Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, the National Fuel Gas Code, Massachusetts Plumbing and Gas Codes and other construction codes in force and effect within the City. Compliance with adopted standards is achieved through education, the permit review process, inspections and enforcement action. The work includes reviewing applications and associated site, plumbing, mechanical and other required construction plans and coordinating code compliance activities with other inspectors and agencies. A Senior Plumbing & Gas Inspector is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. Answers and acts on all questions regarding plumbing and gas fitting actions relative to the erection, addition to, alteration, repair, removal, demolition, and installation of equipment in all buildings and structures. Interprets relative codes and laws to homeowners, plumbers, builders, contractors, and other City inspectors, advising them on proper procedures to follow. Enforces the Massachusetts Plumbing & Gas Code and other applicable municipal laws. Reviews all applications for plumbing and gas permits and drawings; calculates and collects applicable fees; issues plumbing & gas permits. Performs inspections on all commercial and residential properties undergoing reconstruction to ensure code compliance; recommends appropriate measures to correct violations. Inspects and supervises tests of new and existing plumbing, water piping, fixtures, and equipment. Inspects connections to heating systems and water services. Investigates complaints of alleged violations and takes appropriate action; confers with the Inspector of Buildings/Superintendent of Buildings as needed. Consults with and coordinates work with other municipal departments to ensure compliance with other regulatory requirements, especially water/sewer, health and housing. Meets with architects, engineers, plumbers, buildings, etc. regarding plan reviews. Notifies parties of department code operations and policies. Maintains inspection records and prepares reports from same. Maintains current knowledge of all applicable laws, codes, and rules and regulations regarding plumbing and gas fitting operations. Maintains close contact and coordination with City of Waltham Water and Sewer Departments in regard to grease control, cross connection control, proper installation and inspection of oil/gas separators connected to both sanitary and storm sewers, including outside grease traps. Maintains close supervision of chemical wastes and their proper disposal into the sanitary sewer system, to include the filing for and receipt of, necessary permits from appropriate state agencies. Qualifications: Advanced technical education and apprenticeship; more than five years of plumbing or plumbing inspection experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Commonwealth of Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Plumber Plumbing and Gas Fitting License. A pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening and a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI).
