Director of Projected Management Office (PMO) and Project Controls (Government & Places Sectors)

This role is part of an exciting evolution where Central and Local Government sectors under one leadership are now collaborating to deliver sharper focus and more effective outcomes. You will act as a senior leader within the PMO and planning centre of excellence (CoE), bridging the gap between leadership, accountability, and delivery.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for PMO and project controls, you’ll lead high-performing teams, ensure best-in-class service delivery, and foster engagement with industry and professional bodies. This role will require outstanding organisational awareness, strategic influence, and the ability to drive transformation while maintaining a sharp commercial focus.
-key Responsibilities
- Programme and Project Delivery:
- Lead key programmes to ensure alignment with strategic objectives and consistent, high-quality results
- Establish effective delivery environments across people, processes, systems, and governance
- Strategic Leadership and Compliance:
- Influence strategic direction while ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and sustainable growth
- Team Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Manage, inspire, and develop cross-functional teams
- Foster excellence, innovation, and strong partnerships with stakeholders
- Resource & Pipeline Management:
- Oversee resource planning to ensure adequate PMO capabilities
- Deploy PMO resources with appropriate skills and competencies
- Performance & Assurance:
- Ensure PMO systems and processes meet industry standards
- Market Leadership & Development:
- Lead PMO content for government bids in Healthcare (H), Local Services & Transport (LS&T) sectors
- Drive client satisfaction, generate opportunities, and close business
- Problem Resolution:
- Identify and resolve PMO performance gaps across the H and LS&T sectors

Requirements
- Strong track record: Proven expertise in PMO and project controls usage across public sector, NHS, or infrastructure industries
- Familiarity with Mace processes: Solid understanding of Mace’s operational, commercial, and reporting procedures
- Industry awareness: First-hand experience across monopolistic (HS2), commercial, and innovation-led sectors
- Leadership skills:
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentational abilities
- Ability to assure service delivery and provide actionable insights
- Commercial acumen:
- Mastery of contracting, procurement, and financial governance
- Continuous learning: Up-to-date knowledge of PMO/project management tools and technologies
- Professional credentials: Membership or fellowship with a recognition institute
- External engagement:
- Networking, collaboration, and business development skills
- Potential representation on professional or industry committees/boards
- Im inspirational lead:
- Can engage, motivate, and coach teams across all levels
- Demonstrates inclusive, inspirational leadership with high emotional intelligence
- Influential presence:
- Skilled in persuasion and delegation, capable of active politics participation
