Police Custody Nurse / Paramedic
Vacancy for Healthcare Professional (HCP) – Police Custody Service
Are you ready to take your healthcare career in an exciting new direction?
We are seeking skilled and compassionate Health Care Professionals (HCPs) to join our South Yorkshire Police Custody Service. You will deliver vital care to vulnerable individuals in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing while in detention.
You’ll work across the following custody suites:
- Barnsley (S70 2DL)
- Doncaster (DN1 3HX)
- Shepcote (S9 1TP)
No two days will be the same—this is a unique opportunity to support a range of custody services within South Yorkshire.
Requirements to Join the Team
Before applying, ensure you meet the following criteria:
- A professional healthcare qualification (e.g. RN, RMN or Paramedic) with a minimum of 3 years post-qualifying experience.
- Current NMC or HCPC registration.
- Experience in areas such as:
- Emergency care (A&E)
- Primary care
- Mental health
- Substance misuse management
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills with a compassionate and non-judgemental approach.

Key Responsibilities
As an HCP in police custody, you will:
- Conduct physical and mental health assessments for detainees, including:
- Mental crisis and substance misuse withdrawals
- Medication administration and ongoing health management
- Deliver first aid and emergency care when needed
- Work closely with police staff, external healthcare services, and multidisciplinary teams
- Maintain accurate clinical records while ensuring strict confidentiality compliance
- Liaise with professionals to support vulnerable individuals as required
