Policy Advisor – Spousal Employment and Overseas Support

Location: RAF Wittering (hybrid working) Hours: 24 hours per week (3 days) Salary: £27,300 – £28,735 pro rata Essential Requirement: UK driving licence

About the Role

This is a critical policy advisor position ensuring we support non-serving spouses in alignment with the MOD Families Strategy. As the subject lead for Spousal Employment and Overseas Support, you will:

  • Advise on employment opportunities for RAF partners
  • Collaborate with Armed Forces Covenant Champions to highlight the impact of service life
  • Advocate for policy changes at Government level, particularly addressing post-Brexit challenges to overseas employment
  • Maintain strong relationships with COBSEO and MOD Families Team to ensure non-serving voices are represented
  • Engage with employment agencies, overseas stakeholders, and MOD personnel to champion policy reforms

Based at RAF Wittering, this role offers hybrid working with regular office visits.


Responsibilities

  • Develop policy recommendations and resources to improve spousal employment support

  • Research, report, and monitor policy implementation and impacts

  • Engage with stakeholders (including deployed families) to gather insights and feedback

  • Act as a confident advocate in negotiations with the MOD, employment agencies, and government bodies

  • Represent the Federation at events, requiring occasional travel with advance notice

  • Problem-solve proactively and deliver timely updates on case progress to RAF families

  • Generate communications material, such as briefings and reports, to support policy planning


Requirements

  • Empathy and understanding for service life challenges
  • Effective negotiating, networking, and presenting skills with clarity and influence
  • Prior experience—either in policy development or advocacy for atypical orgainsations (e.g., Members' Associations, Armed Forces, or diverse stakeholder groups)
  • Research and reporting expertise to assess employability, regulatory compliance, and case tracking
  • UK driving license for appointed attendance and travel
