Job Description
The Research and Development Investment Portfolio Team (RDIP), in the Science, Research and Innovation Directorate (SRID), is responsible for oversight of the cross-government and DSIT R&D investment portfolio. We ensure that the DSIT Spending Review (SR) settlement and the UK Government’s entire R&D capital budget maximises value for money and supports the Government’s objectives. It is a busy and exciting time for the team, with a great deal of focus and interest on R&D investment from DSIT SoS, Ministers and seniors. This role will play an important part in DSIT’s R&D funding management following the 2025 Spending Review, and in planning ahead of the next Spending Review, with a particular focus on UKRI budgets.
You will be working with a variety of stakeholders and teams across DSIT and UKRI to ensure UKRI can deliver on Government priorities such as those in the Industrial Strategy and in support of all regions of the UK. There may also be scope to work on additional areas including DSIT core R&D budgets, such as Quantum, AI, and Space.
You will provide support to the team through co-ordination across DSIT/UKRI finance, organising meetings and producing readouts as well as supporting the secretariat function of boards. You will also contribute to briefings and advice for Ministers and Senior Civil Servants on various policy areas.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Financial queries relating to UKRI investment and contribute to related advice.
- Track UKRI investment strategy actions and follow-up where needed.
- Set agendas, prepare briefings, and circulate readouts for senior and ministerial level meetings relating to UKRI investment.
- Lead on delivery and risk reporting for the team.
- Support a Grade 7 with Spending Review preparations.
- Discrete process improvement projects within RDIP.

Essential Criteria
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Policy development and delivery experience.
- Numerate: adept at working with numbers to solve real world problems.
- Ability to work on fast paced and complex projects.
- Strong track record of working effectively with others.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience commissioning work within and across Departments.
- Knowledge of the UK's R&D policy landscape.
- An understanding of, or a desire to learn about, HMG finance processes, particularly R&D CDEL. A background in finance is not required.
- The ability to maintain relationships across multiple teams.
- Experience handling data and using MS excel.
- Project management expertise and experience.

Salary and Benefits

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK.
