National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Due to continuous growth, we are looking for a Policy and Change Officer to join our Transmission Policy & Change Team at Customer Connections Directorate.

As a Policy & Change Officer, you’ll be at the forefront of helping to deliver Connections Reform working on policy changes and shaping business requirements to develop how NESO assess the readiness of projects that apply in connection windows. This role is a practical, hands-on role to convert methodologies into practical operational solutions and drive continuous improvement to embed policy change within Connections. Working across multi-functional teams, in an agile environment to turn policy into practical business know-how is key to this role. Supporting our external stakeholders such as industry groups, Transmission Owners (TOs) and Distribution Network Operations (DNOs) with clear policy support.

Key Accountabilities

As a Policy & Change Officer you will be accountable for the following:

  • Act as a point of contact within the team for industry code change and policy changes related to connections windows.
  • Represent the team in agile squads, feeding in policy expertise to help shape solutions that drive how connection windows are run and managed.
  • Support the wider Connections teams (such as customer operations, distribution, other policy teams) to translate policy requirements, consider downstream impacts, and help embed policy change across Connections.
  • Support the policy oversight for checks required for Gate 2 readiness, including working with external parties, and contribute to training on Gate 2 readiness checks to drive consistency in outcomes.
  • Handle customer and stakeholder queries relating to policy or code changes owned or shaped by the team.
  • Engage with external TOs, external stakeholders and internal NESO teams on policy development.
  • Support the team with the preparation of external materials and policies.
  • Support updates to key internal and external reporting.
  • Support in responses to Freedom of Information requests and/or complaints related to relevant policy areas owned by the team.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment. Visa sponsorship may not be available for this role and will be considered in line with business requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
