City of Wolverhampton Council – Political Advisor

Position Overview

  • Title: Political Advisor
  • Salary: £36,363 to £40,777 per annum (Grade 6)
  • Location: Flexible
  • Contract Type: Temporary until 1st August 2027
  • Hours: 37 per week

About the Role

Are you passionate about politics and interested in local government? Do you align with the principles and values of the Conservative Party?

The City of Wolverhampton Council is seeking an exceptional Political Advisor to provide administrative and research support to:

  • The Leader of the Conservative Group
  • Portfolio Holders
  • Lead Members

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Leader with casework
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with:
    • Local MPs
    • WMCA Mayoral Office
    • Other holders of political office
  • Attending Council meetings (Full Council, Cabinet, Scrutiny Meetings)
  • Staying updated on new policy and research developments through connections with local and external organisations

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and research support with a focus on customer-orientated service delivery.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity while handling sensitive information.
  • Foster strategic networking with key stakeholders.
  • Track and analyse emerging policies and trends.
  • Liaise between the Council and other political stakeholders to facilitate effective governance.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A strong interest in local government is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in administrative and research roles, preferably within a public sector or customer-service environment.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification (minimum).
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical conduct.

Additional Context

  • Salary Increases (NJC Pay Award 2026/27): Annual adjustments pending negotiations, effective 1 April 2026.
  • Flexible Working: This role falls under the flexible workstyle policy, allowing employees to work from home, Council offices, or client locations as needed.
