Political Assistant to the Labour Group

This Job Posting Is Open To Internal and External Applicants

Salary Range: £48,003–£51,138 p.a. inclusive of London weighting

Contract: Permanent – Fixed term until 31st May 2030

Hours: 36 hours per week (including occasional evenings)

Location: Brent Civic Centre and other locations from time to time

After the May 2026 local elections, Brent’s Labour Group is shaping its new term with a clear direction: "Believe in Brent" to make the borough cleaner, safer, and more affordable. This role will help amplify local priorities in wider policy conversations, ensuring Brent’s voice is heard beyond the borough.


The Role: Political Assistant to the Labour Group

This diverse and fast-paced position sits at the core of the Labour Group, supporting councillors, the Head of the Leader’s Office, and Labour Group Officers across various committees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Admin Liaison: Provide first-point-of-contact support for Labour Group business.
  • Executive Work: Lead the administration’s workload and offer executive assistance to the Labour Group.
  • Coordination: Bridge the gap between the polical leadership and the Council’s corporate management, helping refine and deliver key priorities.
  • Research & Policy: Investigate and analyse issues vital to Group members.
  • Communication: Develop systems and messaging strategies for the administrative team.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Serve as a reliable adviser with excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Manage competing demands from multiple elected Members while exercising political judgement.

Experience (valued but not mandatory):

  • A background in political environments is desirable but not required. We welcome candidates from varied sectors with a:
    • Strong interest in public policy and local government.
    • Ability to write and communicate clearly in verbal and written forms.

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Produce high-quality written materials (e.g., briefings, speeches, press statements, social media posts, motions) quickly and accurately.
  • Break down complex policy and governance issues into practical advice for councillors.
  • Understand Brent Labour Group objectives, and how they fit into the policy, financial, and legislative future of London’s local government.
  • Demonstrate digital communication skills (preferred: social media coordination, video editing, graphic design).

Note: This is a politically restricted role, subject to legislation governing assistants to elected Members. The post is temporary until May 2030.
