Role Overview

We are a reputable and thriving port located in Teignmouth and we are seeking a motivated Port Operator to join our dedicated team and contribute to the continued success of our port operations.

Accountabilities

  • Operate a range of cargo handling machinery, including - Front Loading Shovel, Forklift Truck, Skid steer, Mobile Lifting Platform, Mobile Material Handling Cranes, Tug Master, and Bagging Equipment.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the cargo handling team, supporting general port operations and stevedoring activities.
  • Prepare, move, and manage cargo, including assisting with the organisation and movement of stores.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the port, following direction from supervisors.
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks on port equipment and infrastructure as required.
  • Travel to ABP Plymouth Port when needed to support operations, including mooring and unmooring vessels and supervising vehicle traffic on and off ferries.

Skills & Experiences

  • Full UK Driving Licence – essential for travel between sites and operational flexibility.
  • Experience operating plant machinery such as Forklifts, Front Loading Shovels, & crane – desirable.
  • Local to Teignmouth or within a reasonable commuting distance.
  • Flexible and adaptable to varying shift patterns, including early starts, late finishes, and weekend work.
  • Team player with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Basic maintenance awareness and willingness to undertake general upkeep of port equipment and infrastructure.
  • Strong communication skills, especially when coordinating with team members and supervisors.

Working Hours

The shift pattern involves working a total of 520 hours over 13 weeks at an average of 40 hours per week. Work is scheduled from Monday to Saturday inclusive, with Sundays being paid at double time for any work done on that day. Any hours worked beyond the initial 520-hour contract during the 13-week period, including Sundays and overtime, will be compensated at a rate of time and a half.
