Portfolio Manager - SPS
Portfolio Manager – Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS)
The Portraiture Manager will provide analytical and actuarial support to the Portfolio Solutions team, leveraging data, pricing and portfolio management expertise to help shape strategy, execute fast follow opportunities effectively, and build a strong follow portfolio with a class-agnostic underwriting strategy.
About the Role and the Team
The Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team has been established to capitalise on the recent market trend towards bifurcation between lead and follow underwriting capacity. This standalone team is focused on:
- Building a strong follow portfolio
- Developing a class-agnostic underwriting strategy
- Fully leveraging data benefits from opportunities
Facilities written within this team will be cross-class and contain CAT (Catastrophe) exposures.

The Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team is part of Markel’s Specialty underwriting division, dedicated to building and managing portfolio-based underwriting solutions across multiple lines of business. Our key mission is to:
- Collaborate with brokers and strategic partners
- Develop scalable, data-driven structures
- Support profitable growth and effective portfolio management

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Actuarial and analytical support: Provide pricing, reserving, and outwards reinsurance purchasing analyses to guide the SPS team’s strategic direction.
- Data pipeline development: Design, build, and maintain efficient end-to-end data processes to support analysis and decision-making.
- Data-driven insights: Utilise available market data to deliver analysis across wholesale product lines outside the SPS division.
- Continuous improvement: Offer recommendations and advancements to analytics, tools, and methodologies to empower SPS underwriters in portfolio management.
- Portfolio management framework: Lead the development of a framework tailored to SPS class portfolios.
- Performance monitoring: Actively track and analyse key SPS performance drivers, optimising class-level portfolio management.
- Strategic analytics: Develop data-driven tools and insights to enhance underwriting decisions through smarter portfolio optimisation.
- Data advocacy: Champion the use of sophisticated data solutioning in business practices.
- Stakeholder and team collaboration: Work with internal support units, such as:
- Actuarial
- Underwriting operations
- Information Technology Services (ITS)
- Delegated and underwriting support services
- To address issues, meet strategic Innovative Portfolio and Afilliate (IPA) objectives, and drive wholesale business priorities.
- Representation: Represent the IPA team in meetings with senior leadership, providing regular, accurate, and timely management information to:
- Markel Insurance Opportunities (MINT) leadership
- Wholesale leadership

Core Skills and Experience
This role demands a blend of technical, analytical, and leadership skillsets:
- Outstanding multi-modal communication: Effectively interpret and disseminate data through visualisations and executive reports across all levels of Markel.
- Stakeholder influence: Possess strong persuasion and consensus-building skills to engage stakeholders across business lines and leadership tiers.
- Complex articulation: Ability to translate complex actuarial strategies, methodologies, and decision-making frameworks for senior leadership, underwriters, and business teams.
- Analytical rigour: Deep analytical expertise, with the ability to independently problem-solve and propose high-impact recommendations.
- Underwriting and insurance knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the wholesale insurance market, product classes, and specialty insurance operations.
- Project deliverance: Proven track record in leading and executing projects workings across diverse business stakeholders, with timely and effective delivery.
- Technical proficiency: Exceptional competency in Microsoft Office suite (ESPECIALLY Excel) and ability to interpret and manipulate large volumes of data.
- Bonus metrics: Experience with data visualisation, (SQL-based) databases, and knowledge of advanced analytics/data science tools is desirable but not mandatory.
