Portfolio Manager – Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS)
About the Role
The Portfolio Manager will provide analytical and actuarial support to the Portfolio Solutions team, leveraging expertise in data, pricing, and portfolio management to shape strategy and execute fast follow underwriting opportunities effectively.
The SPS team has been established to capitalise on the recent market trend towards bifurcation between lead and follow underwriting capacity. This standalone team aims to:
- Build a strong follow portfolio with a class-agnostic underwriting strategy
- Leverage data benefits from cross-class and CAT (Catastrophe)-exposed facilities

Business Unit Overview
The Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team sits within Markel’s Specialty underwriting division, focusing on portfolio-based underwriting solutions across multiple lines of business (LOBs). We collaborate with brokers and partners to develop:
- scalable, data-driven structures
- Solutions supporting profitable growth and efficient portfolio management

Key Responsibilities
Strategy, Analysis & Monitoring
- Provide actuarial analyses (pricing, reserving, outwards reinsurance purchasing) to guide SPS team strategy
- Design and maintain data pipelines for efficient and up-to-date portfolio management
- Leverage market data to share insights across Wholesale divisions beyond SPS
- Develop, enhance and act on recommendations for analytics and tools to support SPS underwriters
- Lead the development of the portfolio management framework for SPS class-level strategies
- Monitor key performance drivers class-wide to support improvements in underwriting performance

Collaboration & Decision-Making
- Champion the use of advanced analytics and data science to inform smarter underwriting decisions
- Work with Support Units (Actuarial, Underwriting Operations, ITS, Delegated Services) to:
- Resolve operational issues
- Align with IPA (Independent Portfolio Analysis) and Wholesale business priorities
- Represent the IPA team by providing clear, timely management information to:
- MINT (Markel’s strategic leadership team)
- Wholesale leadership
- Other relevant forums
Key Skills & Requirements
Technical & Business Expertise
- Outstanding communication skills (written, verbal, visual) to communicate insights effectively across all levels of Markel’s organisation
- Experience influencing and engaging stakeholders, securing consensus on strategic decisions
- Ability to articulate complex strategies, techniques, and data insights for senior leadership
- Strong analytical depth, with independent problem-solving and actionable recommendations
- Deep knowledge of Wholesale insurance products, business segments and specialty market operations
Data & Analytical Mastery
- Proven ability to lead projects involving multi-disciplinary collaboration
- Exceptional Microsoft Office proficiency with a focus on Excel, including:
- Data manipulation
- Analysis of large, complex datasets
- Preferred (but not essential):
- Experience with data visualisation tools
- SQL database querying
- Advanced analytics, statistical methods or data science
