Portfolio Manager - SPS
Portfolio Manager
The Portfolio Manager will provide analytical and actuarial support to the Portfolio Solutions Team, leveraging data, pricing, and portfolio management expertise to shape strategy and execute fast follow opportunities effectively.
About the Role
The Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team, established to capitalise on the market trend towards bifurcation between lead and follow underwriting capacity, is focused on building a strong follow portfolio with a class-agnostic underwriting strategy. Solutions developed by this standalone team are cross-class and will include catastrophe (CAT) exposures. The team partners closely with brokers and strategic advisors to create scalable, data-driven structures that support profitable growth and efficient portfolio management.
SPS operates within Markel’s Specialty Underwriting Division, a division of Markel Group (NYSE: MKL), a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries and expertise across insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations.
The Acting Portfolio Manager’s Responsibilities
- Provide actuarial, pricing, reserving, and outwards reinsurance purchasing analyses to guide the Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team’s direction and strategy.
- Design, build, and maintain data pipelining to ensure efficient and up-to-date portfolio analysis.
- Utilise market data to provide insights across multiple product lines for the Wholesale marketplace outside of SPS.
- Make recommendations and improvements to analytical tools and processes to empower underwriters in effectively managing their portfolio.
- Lead the development of the portfolio management framework for SPS underwriting.
- Monitor key performance drivers for SPS portfolios across lines of business to support underwriting competitiveness.
- Develop and communicate strategic analytics and tools to facilitate smarter portfolio optimisation and underwriting decisions.
- Champion the use of data-driven decision making across the organisation.
- Collaborate with internal support units, including actuarial, underwriting operations, ITS, delegated underwriting, and support services, to resolve issues and meet portfolio priorities.
- Represent IPA team interests by providing timely and accurate management information to senior executives (MINT leadership and Wholesale leadership).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
