About the Opportunity
QBE's leading UK Construction & Engineering team is seeking a Portfolio Manager to lead a high-performing team in an exciting, market-facing leadership role.
This position offers responsibility for underwriting performance, portfolio strategy, business development, and talent development. The successful candidate will drive profitable growth, strengthen market position, and ensure alignment with QBE’s underwriting objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute the UK Construction & Engineering portfolio strategy, ensuring profitability, sustainability, and market alignment.
- Monitor portfolio performance, market trends, and emerging opportunities, taking action to optimise results and improve customer outcomes.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement across underwriting, distribution, and portfolio management.
Underwriting Leadership
- Lead underwriting performance through technical expertise, portfolio oversight, and disciplined risk selection.
- Ensure underwriting decisions comply with appetite, authority frameworks, and portfolio objectives.
- Collaborate with Pricing, Portfolio Management, Risk Solutions, and Claims teams to enhance profitability.

Broker & Market Engagement
- Build and maintain key broker, client, and trading partner relationships to support:
- Retention, growth, and new business opportunities
- Represent QBE in the market, enhancing its reputation as a leading Construction & Engineering insurer.
Governance & Risk Management
- Maintain compliance with legal, regulatory, and governance requirements.
- Champion a risk-aware, compliance-driven culture aligned with QBE’s underwriting standards.
Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Proven expertise in Construction & Engineering underwriting, with a deep understanding of the UK market.
- Extensive broker and client network within the sector.
- Strong track record in portfolio strategy development and driving profitable growth.
- Commercial and financial acumen, with experience using data and insights for underwriting decisions.
- Ability to manage portfolios across varied market conditions, pricing cycles, and risk environments.
- Proven leadership in developing, motivating, and high-performing underwriting teams.
