Duration: 12 months
Purpose for Fixed Term: Limited Term Project
This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

Main duties of the job
Candidate Profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to work in our busy tertiary level Neonatal Intensive Care team
Applicants must have completed their CCT (or equivalent) in paediatrics/neonates with a minimum of 24 months tertiary (NICU) neonatal experience, to include the management of extremely preterm infants and neonatal transport experience.
At any one time there are 8-10 WTE ST1-8 paediatric/neonatal deanery trainees based on the unit. In addition, there are several Clinical Fellows, Research Fellows, MTIs and ANNPs contributing to the SHO rota (15 WTE) and Registrar rota (16-17 WTE). The current rota enables a Registrar/ANNP & ST1-3 for both Intensive Care, High Dependency and Special care and an allocated person for Transport. Paediatric cover is separate to this post.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Participating in middle grade medical rota (registrar ST4+ or equivalent) on the neonatal unit to include shifts on intensive care, high dependency, special care and conducting neonatal follow up clinics.
Applicants will also contribute to the delivery of the neonatal transport service (SONeT)
Additional duties include supporting junior colleagues on the postnatal ward and with community reviews.
Necessary procedural skills include peripheral cannulation, central (umbilical and long line) and arterial lines, tracheal intubation, lumbar puncture and chest drain insertion.
We also hope that applicants will have the opportunity to gain additional leadership and management skills (to include attending/leading MDTs, joining risk/clinical events and other leadership meetings and delivering QI/audit projects which will help support their future consultant applications)
Additional Information
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.
Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
- Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
- Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
- A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- At the time of starting the post, applicants should have completed their CCT or equivalent (Paediatrics/Neonates)
- Applicants should have a minimum of 24 months experience working in a tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the UK at registrar level
- NLS (& APLS) provider or equivalent
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Registrar level neonatal transport experience
- Experience managing extremely preterm infants >22 weeks gestation
- Experience using high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), inhaled nitric oxide and therapeutic hypothermia/cerebral function monitoring
Desirable criteria
- MSC/BSc (or other intercalated degree)
- Interest or experience in research
Aptitudes and skills
Essential criteria
- Competent IT skills and familiarity with NHS systems
- Proven ability to manage acute neonatal emergencies
- Competence in practical procedures (to include neonatal venepuncture, cannulation, umbilical and long line insertion, lumbar puncture, intubation – term/preterm and chest drain insertion)
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
Desirable criteria
- NLS instructor
- ARNI provider or instructor
- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including other members of the MDT
- Undertaken an audit or quality improvement project relevant to neonatal medicine
