Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Vector Biology)

Salary: £39,906 - £43,482 per annum Contract: Full-Time, Fixed-term appointment for 2 years Location: Liverpool

About The Role

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) seeks an ambitious Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join a globally recognised team addressing an urgent public health challenge: sustainable malaria control in Sub-Saharan Africa. Your work will involve identifying novel efficiencies within insecticide-treated net (ITN) production and deployment, lowering greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing health outcomes.

Key to this role is collaboration with manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and national health programmes in Burkina Faso. You will work to statistically analyse real-world entomological and epidemiological data, alongside campaign costs, to inform decision-making and refine the malariasimulation model.

Take-environmentally-conscious innovation further by assessing waste generation, risk mitigation, and cost-effectiveness models. This role will contribute to developing a framework for assessing carbon footprint using epidemiological entomology to guide policy decisions that favour community-driven approaches, improving staff training and reducing unnecessary shipping burdens.

Initially, you will focus on refining current systems—observing whether inefficiencies introduced during integration with EU regulatory compliance requirements can still be improved. Through statistical study and predictive modelling, you will explore sustainable solutions, such as aligning ITN distribution with community-based targeting and safety efforts, reducing overall emissions.

Key Responsibilities

Data and Model Development

  • Collaborate with stakeholders (national programmes, manufacturers, procurement teams, policymakers) to co-design and apply greenhouse gas emissions models, generating data for production credits, policy evaluations or high-impact academic publications.
  • Work with regulatory frameworks, like impact studies on insecticidal risks for non-target organisms and waste generation datasets, to build a comparative environmental emissions database.
  • Maintain engagement with manufacturers to ensure emissions estimates align under the newly standardized assessment approach.
  • Translate research findings across technical, commercial, and policy spheres for clear, actionable insights.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Modelling and Analysis

  • Apply and contribute to the malariasimulation transmission model, scaling its capacity for:
    • simulating the impact of ITNs across household or limited healthcare-provided networks
    • weighing its efficacy against other operational profiles (such as LLIN [long-lasting insecticidal nets] and IRS [indoor residual spraying])
    • extending coverage to scenarios with emerging drug resistance and its cascading effects on vector-borne efficacy.
  • Quantify and justify ongoing health system performance in Burkina Faso through campaign data.

Team and Knowledge Leadership

  • Assist with training junior researchers through expert demos and advising PhD students on statistical analyses.
  • Co-develop analysis pipelines shared across international projects.

Researcher Development

  • Identify findings from work and processable implications for grant proposals.
  • Disseminate results widely, pursued through conference presentations and peer-reviewed literature.

The Ideal Candidate

We seek innovative candidates with a strong combination of:

Core Competencies

  • Fields of PhD:

    • Ecology,
    • Statistics (or equivalent quantitative biology/mathematics), or
    • Mathematical modelling with a focus on vector-borne diseases.
  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Fluency in R programming, statistical analysis techniques, and transmission modelling.
    • Demonstrated modelling achievements—however, existing familiarity with malariasimulation middleware is helpful but not mandatory.
