About Us
UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) seeks to appoint a number of Postgraduate Teaching Assistants for the 2026-27 academic session to assist with undergraduate and postgraduate taught modules. STS is an interdisciplinary department, which is active in teaching and research in the history and philosophy of science and the contemporary study of science and society. STS offers two undergraduate degrees and three master’s degrees, plus our community includes approximately 35 PhD students. STS undergraduate and postgraduate teaching attracts students from many other UCL departments, too.
About The Role
The purpose of a PGTA post is to support teaching, learning, and assessment activities within a module. The module tutor defines the specific activities of the role, based on local needs. In general, the duties of a PGTA will involve:
- Prepare and deliver seminars for modules (both online and in-person)
- Contribute to marking of coursework
- Hold one office hour weekly and respond to email queries from students within reasonable periods
- Attend lectures for the modules taught (at discretion of module tutor)
- Attend regular meetings with module tutor to discuss issues arising
- Assist the module tutor with delivery of the course as otherwise required
- Actively promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities

Information specific to the History of Medicine Student Selected Component (SSC)
In addition to the above, experience in History of Medicine and interest in developing in this field is required for anyone wishing to apply for the PGTA position available as part of the History of Medicine Student Selected Component (SSC), run and managed by the Medical School and taught by STS Associate Professor, Dr Cristiano Turbil. For this position, we are ideally looking for a PGTA working across both Terms (i.e. Term 1 and Term 2).
Please note that student numbers for individual modules are to be confirmed and the department will confirm appointments once this has been completed.
About You
The successful candidates will be pursuing a postgraduate degree, preferably associated with UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies or studying a related subject. Previous teaching experience is an advantage.

Please identify your research specialisations. Your CV should detail your completed degrees, details of any current employer, and details of recent past employment. All PGTAs must complete training within the UCL Arena One scheme, normally available in September. This will be in addition to guidance or mentoring provided by the department for their PGTAs.
What we offer
The appointments will be made on the grade 6 scale (currently £19.14 per hour), (pro rata) on a fixed-term basis. This exceeds the London Living Wage (LLW).
PGTAs will be paid based on the requirements of the UCL PGTA Code of Practice for up to a maximum of 60 hours per module. Coursework marking and feedback is included in the standard contracted hours, whilst examination marking (where applicable) will be paid additionally and calculated on the number of scripts marked.
