Postal Delivery Driver
Royal Mail Delivery Driver (Postie) – Fixed Term Contract (9 Months)
Location: Dumfries Delivery Office, DG1 1AA Job Type: Fixed term contract – 9 months Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available Working Hours: 30 hours/week – 5 days per week (Mon–Sun), with a shift range of 08:00–20:00*
About the Role
Join Royal Mail as a Postal Delivery Driver (Postie) and become a trusted community face, delivering letters and parcels across Dumfries on a rotating, flexible schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Sort and distribute letters/parcels at the Dumfries delivery office
- Deliver post via auto van and on foot in your neighbourhood
- Engage with residents and businesses to build stronger customer relationships
- Operate outdoors in all weather conditions, including:
- Wandering long distances (up to 12 miles/day or 20,000+ steps)
- Driving a Royal Mail vehicle daily (passing a mandatory driving assessment*)
- Lifting/manoeuvring 10kg+ mailbags
- Managing high delivery volumes, especially peak periods like peak season

What to Expect
- A physically demanding and dynamic role—no two days are identical
- Weekend availability required (as per your rota)
- Time-sensitive deadlines under pressure, incl. handling election materials and regulated items (e.g. perishables/alcohol)
- Overtime paid as per contract
About You
Royal Mail will provide training, uniform, and an iconic red van, but you’ll need:
✔ A full, manual UK driving licence (max 6 points; registered to your current address) ✔ Physical stamina to walk hills, climb stairs and routinely cover 12+ miles/day ✔ Reliability and self-motivation (deliveries must meet strict deadlines) ✔ Customer-first mindset with a keen eye on service quality ✔ Confidence in working outdoors independently across the Dumfries area
