Postie (Delivery Driver) – Fixed Term (9 Month) Contract
Location
Glasgow – Delivery Office, G21 & G22 (Opposite Glasgows SM Service Centre) & Head Office, G4 0AA
Employment Details
- Contract Type: Fixed Term (9 Months)
- Salary: £13.68 per hour (paid monthly) + paid overtime available
- Working Hours: 30 hours/week – 5 days in 7, including Sundays (hours: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM*)
- Shift Pattern: Rotating schedule across weekdays and weekends based on demand
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Royal Mail Postie (Delivery Driver), you’ll:
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Sort letters and parcels at the delivery office
- Transport and deliver mail by van and on foot across your local route
- Build strong customer relationships
- Safely manage and deliver:
- Exam results and certificates
- Business and private parcels
- Special items (birthday cards, time-sensitive documents)
- Observed* items in line with Royal Mail security and regulatory standards*
This isn’t just about delivering mail—it’s about connecting communities and ensuring letters and packages reach the right hands at the right time.
The Day-to-Day Work
✅ Volunteering: Support for 6 weeks of UK Living Wage Working (LWW) placement ✅ Mobility packages with the Royal Mail Cycle Scheme Active Travel Grant (£2,000 for approved purchases) and private health facilities. ✅ Working indoors or outdoors
About the Role
- Performance & multi-goals: From letters to parcels and large items across an entire office & routing technology.
- Social Interaction: Customer-facing role.
- Flexibility with hours: Normal school hours
- Responsibility for complex tasks like: robotics, barcode scanning, integrated routes & security checks.

Key Details: What to Expect
🔹 This role involves:
- Daily long-distance walking – up to 12 miles per shift (equivalent to ~20,000 steps).
- Driving Royal Mail vans daily (full training and assessment cover).
- Working independently (with structured customer relationships on routes).
- Multiple deliveries – dealing with time-sensitive requests like exams, orders, and urgent parcels.
- Adapting to changes: Shifts, routes, and general postage demands during peak periods.
Requirements & Expectations
To be successful as a Royal Mail Postie, you’ll need:
- Full and valid UK manual driving licence (currently in your own name – residential and impressively 6 or fewer points before the test).
- Confident commute and knack of navigating busy streets.
- Allocated courses on licence share schemes for practical classes
Physical Fitness & Workload
💪 Your must-dos for this demanding role include:
- More than 10 km, including being able to climb stairs, hills or negotiate uneven terrain through winter conditions.
- Safe physical handling and carrying 22 to 30 kg using tools like wheelbarrows, forklifts (when required) and manual lifting of mail bags, strollers & parcels.
- Manual completion of older methods, such as manual VSMAFT (Vehicle-Based Movements of Address Files).
What Personal Qualities & Soft Skills You’ll Need
- Independent and self-motivated
- Strong sense of liaison and genuinely customer-friendly attitude. Flexible availability including evenings/weekends as required.
- Minimum disqualification points, but warrants familiarity with driving regulations.
- Pass our safe, safe & appropriate vehicle activity assessments (last part of initial training).
