Location: Postgraduate Office at the Department of Engineering's site in central Cambridge
About the Role
The Postgraduate Office offers a complete "cradle to grave" service to all postgraduate students registered in the Engineering Department, from initial enquiries, through the application process, registration on arrival, the period of study, and examination, to closure of files once a student has graduated.
The Department currently recruits to six taught MPhil, two MRES, two part-time taught postgraduate programmes, with annual applications of over 2000 and an annual intake of circa 200 postgraduate taught students. The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology recruits to two taught MPhil, and one MRes programme.
Responsibilities
The role-holder will manage the postgraduate taught course support systems, processes and communications on behalf of the Faculty of Engineering to ensure the successful delivery of all the postgraduate taught programmes as well as support the work of the Postgraduate Office. This is a very busy and varied role involving daily communication with academic staff, students and potential applicants, so the successful candidate must have excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and have the ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
