Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) – Fixed Term Contract

Job Type:

Fixed Term contract (xx months) (amend/delete if not applicable)


Salary & Hours

  • £13.68 per hour (paid monthly*), plus paid overtime available
  • 35-hour working week, rotating schedule across Monday–Sunday
  • Working hours: Typically 0840–1530* (may vary)

(Adjustments may be required where nationality/austerity restrictions apply)


About the Role

Royal Mail’s Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) is perfect for someone who loves routine, independence, and being the face of a trusted community service— delivering letters, parcels, and life’s important moments right to your door.

You’ll:

  • Work a rotating shift system, including weekend duties (Sundays included at Hereford Delivery Office)
  • Sort and deliver high volumes of mail by van and on foot
  • Build lasting customer relationships
  • Work across all weathers and unpredictable conditions

The role is fast-paced and physically demanding, but the rewards—community impact, variety, and real meaning—make every step (and mile) worthwhile.


Key Responsibilities

Daily Tasks

  • Sort & distribute letters, parcels, and freight (from exam results to packages)
  • Drive our iconic red van for deliveries across your route
  • Walk long distances (up to 12 miles per day or ~20,000 steps) while carrying parcels
  • Handle physically demanding work, including stair/hill climbing + lifting 10kg+ mailbags
  • Face diverse weather conditions—rain, wind, snow, and sunshine, every day

What’s Expected of You?

Royal Mail provides training, uniform, and a van—but you’ll need:

✅ UK driving licence (manual ONLY) – Registered to your current name and address, with no more than 6 penalty points ✅ Willingness to drive daily and pass a Royal Mail vehicle assessment ✅ Robust physical fitness – Comfortable with long walks, hills, stairs, and manual handling ✅ Reliability, discipline, and resilience in fast-paced environments ✅ Customer-service mentality – Take pride in upholding Royal Mail’s reputation ✅ Self-motivated and well-organised – You’ll work solo and meet tight deadlines

(Note: Some routes require park access/turning space, so vehicle suitability may be assessed.)
