Poultry Caretaker

Production Team Member – Barn Farm

Job Details

This role is a member of the production team at Barn Farm. The team consists of 9 people working on a 6/2 shift pattern (six days on, two days off). The role reports to the Team Lead, with overarching responsibility to the Facility Manager.


About The Job

The production team is responsible for maintaining a high standard of premium breeding stock to ensure quality eggs for hatching purposes.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the health, welfare, and well-being of a large number of birds
  • Ensuring they are properly fed, watered, and maintained in a clean, healthy environment
  • Daily collection of high-quality hatching eggs

Tasks And Responsibilities

To maintain poultry in optimum condition, you will:

  • Provide fresh water and a nutritious diet to preserve health and vigour.
  • Ensure a suitable environment with proper ventilation and resting areas.
  • Prevent pain, injury, or disease through preventative measures and rapid treatment.
  • Give birds adequate space, proper facilities, and companionary care (same species).
  • Avoid mental suffering through humane conditions and treatment.

Hygiene and Biosecurity Requirements:

  • Follow all personal hygiene rules (hand washing, boot dipping, protective clothing).
  • Strictly adhere to bio-security protocols.
  • Keep floor eggs to a minimum by encouraging birds to use nest boxes (managerial guidance).

Record Keeping & Maintenance:

  • Accurately collect and record egg collections.

  • Weigh food precisely.

  • Maintain house hygiene (dusting, lighting, cleaning, sweeping, litter management, boot dips).

  • Ensure nest boxes remain clean and functional.

  • Log house temperature, mortality rates, and egg production.

  • Keep the farm clean, tidy, and orderly.

Compliance:

  • Follow all farm health and safety rules and procedures.

About You

Salary & Benefits

  • Hourly rate: £13.87
  • Annual equivalent: £33,000
  • Holidays: 32 days, including Bank Holidays

Working Hours

  • Shift pattern: 6 days on, 2 days off (rolling)
  • Start time: ~7:00am
  • End time: ~3:30pm (occasional extended hours possible)

Additional Information

⚠️ Strict biosecurity protocols for visitors:

  • Showering required on farm entry.
  • No personal items allowed (phone, jewellery, etc.). → Leave farm during breaks (must re-shower upon return).

👕 Farm clothing provided (laundered on-site).

🚫 Candidates may not own avian species at home.
