About the Project
Curzon Street Station is a new £800m HS2 project in Birmingham city centre. This station development forms part of the new HS2 network, linking London and the North, while also acting as a catalyst for broader growth in Birmingham’s East Side. As a leading station, Curzon Street aims to provide a centre of excellence for best practice in reporting and management models.
About the Role
This position is for a BI Developer specialising in the Microsoft technology stack, primarily within a long-term project. Reporting to both the Mace PMO team and other internal data professionals, the role is client-facing and embedded within the broader project.
Interactions with stakeholders from other organisations will occur occasionally, especially when working on joint ventures or directly with clients.
This role offers an opportunity to:

Responsibilities
The BI Developer will be responsible for the following key areas:
- Taking sole responsibility for the end-to-end delivery of business intelligence solutions
- Ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timely delivery of all project deliverables, both in personal output and team activities
- Developing digital tools, processes, and reports (including interactive Power BI dashboards) to support project teams and enhance client delivery
Key Tasks Include:
- Following a standardised technical development lifecycle, covering:
- Requirements definition
- Design, development, and testing
- User acceptance testing (UAT)
- Deployment, handover, and post-implementation support

Translating user requirements into detailed technical specifications, ensuring alignment with cross-functional development teams

Stakeholder communication, including:
- Updating project teams on delivery timelines and quality metrics
- Raising, managing, and resolving issues promptly

Creating learning materials, training resources, and documentation to share expertise across teams

Supervising and managing one or more direct reports (though specific reporting lines may be adjusted based on project needs)
Requirements
Essential:

Solution architecture & design skills:
- Ability to clearly explain how solution components interact and propose system architecture based on experience and industry best practices
-
Stakeholder management:
- Strong understanding of working within Integrated Project Teams
- Experience managing stakeholders including clients, project managers, and data owners

Microsoft Power BI (Visualisation Layer):
- Attentiveness to UI/UX standards and accessibility guidelines
- Can recommend and create optimal visualisations, dashboards, and data interactions based on requirements

ETL (Extraction, Transformation, Loading):
- Proficency in query folding and dataflows to optimise data loading
- Understanding of query optimisation through knowledge of operational sequence

M Query & Development Environment:
- Comprehensive knowledge of M language (Power Query's query language)
- Can design and implement model policies, including:
- Incremental refresh
- Hybrid tables (where relevant)

Data Modeling:
- Advanced proficiency in DAX (Data Analysis Expressions)
- Effective use of variables and filter contexts to improve performance
- Ability to create and manage row-level security (RLS) roles to enforce proper data filtering
- Knowledge of relational data modelling
- Experience designing and implementing efficient relational schemes
- Can optimise query performance using appropriate data model architecture (table types)
- Advanced proficiency in DAX (Data Analysis Expressions)
