Power BI Optimisation Lead
Power BI Optimisation Lead (Fixed Term, 12 Months)
Equans is seeking an Power BI Optimisation Lead to join our BI Support team on a 12-month fixed-term contract basis. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) offering a competitive salary, company vehicle/allowance, bonus, and comprehensive benefits package.
About the Role
As a lead within the BI Support team, you’ll lead efforts to:
- Standardise and streamline Power BI deployments
- Proactively monitor capacity usage
- Introduce innovative tooling for smarter reporting
Your expertise will be critical in shaping best practices, coaching developers, and establishing a well-governed, scalable reporting environment—empowering decision-makers across the business.
What You’ll Deliver
Capacity & Strategic Governance
- Lead proactive monitoring and auditing of Power BI performance (models, refresh cycles, resource utilisation)
- Define enterprise-wide benchmarks and publishing protocols to prevent inefficient deployments
- Architect and implement breach detection frameworks with automated alerting for mission-critical models
Enterprise Model Optimisation
- Drive strategic remediation of underperforming datasets and workspaces, aligned with business priorities
- Champion standardised model architecture to minimise refresh overhead and eliminate duplication
- Orchestrate centralised data sourcing strategies to streamline queries and improve performance at scale
Tooling Innovation & Automation
- Evaluate and deploy AI-powered extensions and third-party solutions to accelerate optimisation and reduce manual effort
- Lead integration of support applications that enhance delivery velocity and operational efficiency
Strategic Technology Enablement
- Assess and pilot emerging technologies (e.g., Direct Lake, SQL DB instances) to future-proof data infrastructure
- Design refresh segmentation strategies to mitigate peak load and improve system responsiveness

- Develop and embed reusable model templates and modular design frameworks for consistency and scalability

Who We’re Looking For
Key Requirements
- Strong expertise in Power BI architecture, capacity planning, and performance tuning
- Proficiency in DAX, Power Query, and data modelling best practices
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Capacity Metrics App) and alerting systems
- Familiarity with Direct Lake and AI-driven optimisation
- Ability to translate technical insights into business value and strategic recommendations
- Proven track record of reducing costs and operational inefficiencies in BI environments
- Flexible, adaptable mindset with the ability to manage large workloads and tight deadlines
Specific Experience
- Hands-on experience in:
- Power BI model design
- Performance tuning and capacity management
- Infra-cost reduction and report performance optimisation
- Auditing Power BI environments to identify inefficiencies
- Experience with Power BI Premium capacity metrics, refresh diagnostics, and workspace governance
- Collaborative experience in:
- Embedding best practices
- Coaching junior developers
- Track record of introducing innovative tooling and automation
- Exposure to Direct Lake, SQL DB instances, and AI-driven optimisation tools
