About The Role

Do you enjoy solving complex power system challenges and shaping how the electricity network of the future will operate?

As part of our Network Topology Optimisation (NTO) team, you’ll play a key role in identifying smarter ways to operate Great Britain’s electricity transmission network by evaluating innovative analytical approaches and emerging technologies.

Working alongside operational experts, technology specialists, suppliers, and leading academic partners, you’ll assess new models, algorithms, and methodologies to determine how they can improve network capability, reduce constraints, and support a more efficient, secure, and resilient electricity system.

The Power System Analysis Engineer role is centered on technical analysis, innovation, and operational application. While you won’t be developing software or conducting academic research, you’ll use your power systems expertise to evaluate innovative solutions, validate their operational suitability, and influence the development of future tools and capabilities that support electricity system operation.

This is a hybrid role, with Wokingham as the primary office location.

We’re also open to considering candidates based at other NESO office locations, with the expectation of traveling to Wokingham approximately once a week to collaborate with colleagues, suppliers, and key stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Evaluate innovative power system solutions and assess their operational suitability.
  • Work with suppliers, technology partners, and academic institutions to trial and validate new analytical approaches.
  • Apply power system knowledge to understand operational challenges and identify opportunities to improve network performance.
  • Influence the development of future Network Topology Optimisation capabilities through technical analysis and evidence-based recommendations.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts and product developments to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support the introduction of new operational capabilities into business-as-usual processes.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment. Visa sponsorship may not be available for this role and will be considered in line with business requirements.

About You

You’ll have a strong understanding of electricity transmission networks or power system operation, together with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. You’re naturally curious, enjoy exploring innovative ideas, and can translate complex technical information into practical recommendations.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About Us

At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we play a vital role in tackling climate change and securing Great Britain's energy future. We already operate the world's fastest decarbonising electricity system and are working towards our ambition to run it carbon-free for a short period this year - provided the market supplies electricity exclusively from renewable sources. Alongside this, we provide expert advice to government on how to deliver a clean power system by 2030.

In autumn 2024, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) transitioned to become NESO - an independent, expert public corporation with a whole-system view across electricity, gas, and hydrogen. NESO operates independently and transparently, always acting in the best interests of all energy users.

Licensed and regulated by Ofgem, we make impartial decisions that balance sustainability, affordability, and security. Our organisation is fully independent from government, the regulator, and all commercial interests, with a clear focus on system-wide benefit, long-term thinking, and public value.

The time to deliver is now. Join the energy transformation and help shape the future.

Your energy. Our future. Together

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
