Power Systems Engineer at RED Engineering

We are now seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join one of our UK offices (London, Bicester, or Newcastle).


Key Responsibilities

As a Power Systems Engineer at RED Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in the design and optimisation of power systems specifically within data centre facilities. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Running computer simulations
  • Working with design teams
  • Ensuring the reliability and efficiency of power distribution systems

We prioritise candidates with ETAP experience but have prepared to also consider those with DIgSILENT, SKM, or PSCAD expertise.

Core Duties:

  • Simulation Expertise
    • Conduct load flow analysis to ensure optimal power distribution
    • Perform short circuit analysis to assess system integrity under fault conditions
    • Coordinate protection systems to enhance reliability and safety of the power distribution network
    • Execute arc flash studies to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance
    • Conduct earthing studies to design high-level systems for LV (Low Voltage) distribution

  • Collaborative Design Support

    • Work closely with design teams to understand project requirements
  • Documentation & Reporting

    • Validate input data to ensure accuracy and reliability of simulation results
    • Prepare detailed reports outlining simulation results, recommendations, and design considerations
    • Maintain comprehensive project documentation on power system simulations and support activities
  • Continuous Professional Development

    • Engage with the continuous improvement of methodologies and tools within the power systems team

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Power Engineering or equivalent discipline
  • Working towards registration as either MCIBSE/MIEE (or equivalent)

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum professional experience in power systems engineering, preferably within data centres, oil & gas, or utility sectors
  • Strong understanding of relevant software, with preference for ETAP familiarity, though experience with DIgSILENT/SKM and PSCAD considered
  • Deep knowledge of electrical machines, including:
    • Generators
    • Transformers
    • Motors
    • Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)
  • Broad expertise across LV (Low Voltage) and MV (Medium Voltage) systems, covering up to 33 kV (High Voltage) where feasible
  • Technical mastery over:
    • Load flow analysis
    • Short circuit analysis
    • Protection coordination
    • Arc flash studies
    • Harmonic studies
    • Underground cable sizing
    • (Desirable: Transient stability & earthing studies knowledge)

  • Ability to utilise IT-based calculation & spreadsheet software
  • Strong grasp of BS safety standards
  • Efficiency in workload prioritisation & compliance with deadlines

Preferred Background

  • Experience in consulting or construction, particularly within international operations
  • A consultancy-aligned orientation mature enough for Tractebel’s global scale, diversity, and diversity of clients
