About the Role
The NIHR Maternity Disparities Consortium (NIHR MDC) is a £50m, five-year NIHR initiative supported by a diverse consortium of organisations. The project seeks to drive improvements in maternity outcomes and foster future research leadership in addressing disparities before, during, and after pregnancy.
Based at Newcastle University (Responsible for Research and Capacity Development), this role will also collaborate closely with the University of Birmingham team (Responsible for Research). While blended working is supported, the role expects the majority of time to be spent on-site.
The consortium operates across three themes, two workstreams, and two core functions, with a strong focus on Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPI/E) to ensure research is grounded in lived experience.
Key Objectives:
- Co-develop and implement the consortium’s PPI/E strategy.
- Embed meaningful public/patient representation across all consortium activities.
- Enhance diverse public engagement to inform research and ensure inclusivity.
- Foster collaboration with Community Engagement and Coproduction (CECP) leads.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
