I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

In essence, you would be their eyes and their ears in maintaining and promoting the business. They expect to work closely with their Practice Manager to ensure that they are kept fully abreast of contractual and compliance changes, and that they are informed promptly of any issues, changes, or ideas that would allow them to make informed decisions, implement service delivery improvements, and adopt legislative change where necessary.
This is a varied and complex, permanent, full-time role, which attracts a salary circa £50,000. Slightly more may be on offer for an exceptional candidate. Whilst previous NHS and/or Practice Manager experience is not a pre-requisite, extensive management experience and the confidence to lead a wide-ranging team through often challenging operating conditions most certainly is.
You will be required to be adaptable and calm in stressful situations, be well organised, happy to lead and develop a team, but to also provide positive guidance and support – and innovative solutions – to unexpected challenges. The breadth of your portfolio covers everything from building issues, staff/HR, and patient problems when they arise. Excellent time management skills and adaptability are key essential attributes to successfully undertaking this role.
