Title
PreOp/ PACU Registered Nurse (Full-Time)
Description
Assists in the provision of nursing care to patients in a same-day surgery setting. Takes full responsibility for patient care according to physician’s orders and facility policies, including monitoring and controlling the use and charging for supplies.
Supervision: Reports to Supervisor of Clinical Services.
Education & Experience
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Current certifications:
- American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Patient Care:
- Assesses, develops, and implements total nursing care for post-operative patients
- Records and reports symptoms, reactions, abnormalities, and changes in patient condition to the appropriate personnel
- Admits patients to the sit-up area
Medication & Treatment:
- Administers medications and treatments as ordered by physicians, ensuring:
- An order precedes medication administration
- Intended actions and side effects are understood
- Documentation is accurate and complete

Key Requirements for Medication Administration:
- Assesses pain/nausea needs accurately
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
Additional Duties:
- Provides psychological support to patients and families
- Coordinates care with other departments (e.g., home X-ray, external radiology)
- Performs routine charging and verification of medications and supplies consistency
Critical Thinking & Independence:
- Functions independently in emergency situations
- Makes logical, quick decisions based on sound judgment
- Remains competent through continuing education (CEU requirements include re-licensure)
Support & Maintenance:
- Assists in orienting new employees with departmental policies
- Maintains supply inventory and cleanliness in the workspace
Physical Demands
- Standing: 66-100% of the time
- Sitting: 0-33% of the time
- Walking: 66-100% of the time
- Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. as needed
- Carrying: Up to 25 lbs. as needed
- Pushing: Up to 400 lbs. on wheels (assisted)
- Climbing: 1–5 flights of stairs as necessary
- Bending, squatting, kneeling, overhead reaching, and rotating shoulders as required for care

- Visual and hearing acuity sufficient for patient care
- Movement demands: Standing, walking, pushing equipment, and bending
Environmental Conditions
- Indoor setting: 95-100%
- Outdoor conditions: 0-5% (exposure varies by circumstance)
- Temperature exposure: Range from 30°F to 115°F
- No exposure to gases (expected)
Exposures & Hazards:
- Fumes, dust, odours, mist (occasional)
- Needles and sharps; biomedical sources (occasional radiation/vibration)
- Potential contact with communicable diseases; electrical equip. hazards
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided (gowns, gloves, masks, head cover)
