Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician (Level 3) Apprenticeship
In this technical apprenticeship, you will carry out a wide range of assignments to improve the efficiency, quality, and repeatability of the production areas. Create supporting documentation and provide training to ensure successful implementation.
Main Responsibilities
- Machine Shop, Plating & Mould Shop
- Provide advice and training in numerous areas, such as process deployment / programming / setting etc.
- Review and monitor component production readiness and provide, define, and document equipment required, such as gauges / tooling / programs etc.
- Use technical expertise to define, document, and provide training for current best practice, ensuring cost-effective, repeatable, and high-quality practices are used for both existing production and New Product Introductions (NPI).
- Support production areas to achieve their Key Performance Indicators by attending daily meetings and providing technical solutions to challenges as they arise, including quality investigations and machine capability studies.
- Enable the smooth integration of new products into production by documenting tooling, work holding, and gauging requirements in routings and specifications.
- Ensure costs are captured and calculated correctly by maintaining the integrity of routed times, work centres, and costed batch sizes in SAP.
- Investigate and initiate method improvement and cost-saving projects in the Production areas.
- Work with the NPI team to deliver new to market products that are right first time and use best practice.
- Work with and help roll out TE Operating Advantage (TEOA) requirements, roll out Centres of Excellence (COE), and utilise Best Demonstrated Practices (BDP’s).
- Keep well-informed of technical developments and review manufacturing methods.
- Observe and comply with Health and Safety regulations as laid down in company procedures and Government legislation.
- Carry out any other reasonable tasks as directed by the business from time to time.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.
Course Contents
- Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO), European Norm (EN).
- Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
- Apply scientific, technical, or engineering principles.
- Apply problem-solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
- Organise, plan, and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
- Identify, organise, and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security, and environmental impact.
- Produce job-specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals, and specifications.
- Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
- Record information - paper-based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.
- Follow standard operating procedures.
- Follow manufacturer's instructions. For example, safe instructions for use of products, processes, and machinery.
- Apply quality assurance and control principles and practices. For example, conduct physical checks, take samples, inspections, or tests.
- Apply continuous improvement techniques.
- Apply team-working principles.
- Communicate in writing with others, for example, stakeholders, colleagues, and managers.
- Communicate with others verbally, for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
- Use information and digital technology.
- Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
- Carry out and record learning and development activities.
- Apply equity, diversity, and inclusion procedures.

On Completion of the Apprenticeship
You will have achieved the following qualifications:
- ST1395 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
- Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Level 3 Diploma

- GCSE in: English, Maths (grade 4/5 C or above)
- GCSE in: Science, ICT (grade 4/5 C and above)
