About the Role
Start here. Grow here.
Are you ready to join a team of flood risk specialists and shape the future of the water industry?
AECOM is seeking a Principal or Associate to expand its Water team, leading flood forecasting projects, mentoring staff, and improving operations with the UK Environment Agency and beyond.
While your core focus will be on real-time flood forecasting, you’ll also collaborate on broader projects in hydrology, modelling, and water resource management.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Flood Modelling Technical Lead, you will:
- Produce and review Flood Forecasting Inception Stage Reports, assessing the quality of hydrometric data, hydrological models, and existing forecasting systems.
- Develop, calibrate, and validate flood forecasting models (e.g. PDM, Flood Modeller, HEC-RAS, MIKE 11, FEH hydrological methods).
- Conduct non-real-time hydrological modelling and mitigate uncertainties.
- Author and review high-grade technical reports, ensuring compliance with Environment Agency guidelines.
- Lead and contribute to time-sensitive tenders and client pitches.
- Mentor junior staff and foster a culture of technical excellence.
- Engage closely with clients and cross-disciplinary teams to deliver robust solutions.
- Stay current on regulatory frameworks and industry best practices.
- Use AECOM’s project management tools to meet deadlines and budgets efficiently.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
