Principal / Associate HVDC Cable Design Engineer
Principal HVDC Cable Engineer – Transmission & Distribution (Baker Hicks)
About the Role
Baker Hicks, a fast-growing leader in the Transmission & Distribution sector with a decade of success across major UK projects, is seeking a Principal HVDC Cable Engineer to spearhead high-voltage DC projects, oversee tender submissions, and strengthen the company’s HVDC capabilities. Reporting to the Director – HV, this role ensures consistent delivery, quality control, and technical expertise across critical infrastructure designs.
The Principal HVDC Cable Engineer will lead production of technical documentation, drawings, and specifications for HVDC schemes—including cable systems, converter stations, insulation coordination, and protection requirements. The candidate must mentor junior engineers, manage project coordination, and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills alongside deep technical knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
The role encompasses technical leadership and business development:
Technical Delivery & Design Leadership
- Oversee HVDC cable system modelling and rating calculations
- Develop cable routing studies (e.g., HDDs, landfalls, transition joint bays)
- Produce primary layouts for converter stations, including :
- siting studies for cables and converter equipment
- installation arrangements
- Authorise technical specifications for supplier procurement
- Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and assess testing protocols
- Lead design risk assessment, quality reviews, and documentation approval (e.g., feasibility studies, detailed technical reports)
Quality Control & Engineering Coordination
- Check and approve detailed construction drawings, reports, and specifications for compliance and accuracy
- Mentor junior engineers and CAD technicians in best practices
- Ensure alignment with IEC standards and client-specific requirements (National Grid, SSEN, Scottish Power)
- Act as a technical interface with 3rd-party stakeholders

Business Growth & Innovation
- Respond to HVDC tender opportunities, benchmarking competitors and refining proposals
- Develop Baker Hicks’ HVDC capabilities, proposing industry innovations
- Identify new opportunities for technical and process efficiency
Essential Requirements
Technical & Professional Background
- BEng/BSc in Electrical or Power Engineering (MEng/MSc considered advantageous)
- Experienced in HVDC design, including :
- Cable design, converter layouts, protection systems
- System modelling and insulation coordination
- Equipment rating calculations and technical specifications
- Familiar with UK network standards (National Grid, Scottish Power, SSEN) and IPC/EIC Codes of Practice
- Proficient in AutoCAD, CREO, or similar CAD platforms, with attention to clarity for contractors
- Candidacy towards CEng registration (desirable) but not mandatory
Soft Skills & Stakeholder Engagement
- Exceptional oral/written communication to liaise with clients, consultants, and technical teams
- Problem-solving mindset with resilient support of bodily piercing/permanent methods and new schemes under short timescales
- Strong SCIENCE & MATHEMATIC foundation; conceptual appreciation of power electronics and grounding systems
- Self-motivated: minimal supervision required to frequent discipline in a competitive environment
