Principal HVDC Cable Engineer London / UK-wide (Hybrid Options)
Baker Hicks has grown rapidly in the Transmission & Distribution sector over the last ten years, securing major projects across the UK. As client demand for exceptional engineering design continues to rise, an opportunity has arisen for a Principal HVDC Cable Engineer.
The HVDC Cable Engineer will report to the Director of HV and lead HVDC project delivery, pursue HVDC tenders, expand Baker Hicks’ HVDC capabilities, and ensure consistency in design quality, technical documentation, and efficient business development.
About You
You must have hands-on experience with HVDC design production, calculations, reports, and drawings, covering:
- HVDC cable systems, converter station layouts
- Equipment specifications (ratings, insulation, protection)
- Routing and siting studies for cables, stations, and joint bays
- Procurement technical specifications in alignment with client standards
- Strong mathematics and science background (ideally power engineering)
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills
- Self-motivation, independence, and ability to mentor junior engineers/CAD technicians
- Resilience to work without close supervision while assessing project risks

What You Will Do
Daily responsibilities include:

Lead HVDC design including:
- Cable/electrical system modelling & rating calculations
- Route/HDD/landfall studies, transition joint layouts, and installation schedules
- Converter station primary layouts & siting studies
- Preparation of feasibility/detailed design reports + technical documentation
- Procurement spec writing, FAT support, and testing requirements assessment

Technical excellence:
- Ensure designs and technical drawings meet client standards (e.g., National Grid, SSEN, Scottish Power)
- IEC standards familiarity
- Proactively identify and mitigate quality/delivery risks

Team & client interaction:
- Interface with 3rd parties for technical collaboration
- Mentor junior engineers & CAD professionals
What You Will Bring

Qualifications:
- Minimum BEng/BSc in Electrical or Power Engineering (MEng/MSc preferred)
- Ch нет/chartered engineer (CEng) status sought (not essential)

Experience:
- Ideally with OEM or HVDC consultancy background

Security Essential:
- Ability to maintain necessary security clearance/assurance level per project requirements
- Country residency/nationality per client plans
