About the Division
The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland’s water and wastewater challenges. Our work ensures:
- Safe water supplies for future generations
- Flood risk mitigation in urban centres
- Improving river and coastal ecosystems
With multi-disciplinary teams, we provide end-to-end support—from advisory and feasibility studies to design and implementation—delivering best-in-class solutions while offering stimulating career growth.
Overview of the Role
We are seeking a talented Principal/Associate Process Engineer to leverage your expertise and drive our UK and Ireland water programmes, ensuring seamless delivery for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead process engineering input across feasibility, concept, preliminary, and detailed design for water treatment projects
- Develop and review process designs, including:
- Block flow diagrams
- P&ID (piping and instrumentation diagrams)
- Mass balances and equipment sizing
- Operational data analysis to identify performance optimisations
- Process modelling and simulation for design enhancements
- Write and deliver technical reports, proposals, and client presentations
- Review process deliverables (calculations, reports) for accuracy and compliance
- Engage with clients and stakeholders to ensure on-time, high-quality project delivery
- Mentor junior engineers, promoting technical development and team cohesion
- Collaborate with resource coordinators to manage project resources, including recruitment and training initiatives
- Support business development by providing technical input for tenders and strategies

Requirements
We are looking for a dedicated professional eager to drive change, take ownership, and advance personally.
Essential Criteria
- Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised Professional Institution
- Proven experience in municipal water treatment
- Strong knowledge of:
- Conventional and emerging treatment technologies
- Significant experience in designing feasibility, outline, and detailed process designs
- Ability to conduct root-cause analysis and process optimisation
- Excellent technical writing skills with clear, coherent English
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
- Commitment to continuous professional development
- Willingness to participate in technical knowledge-sharing networks
