Principal / Associate Wastewater Process Engineer

Associate Waste Water Process Engineer – Water Engineering Teams (Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Glasgow)

About the Role

An experienced Associate Waste Water Process Engineer is needed to join our Water Engineering teams across the UK (Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, or Glasgow).

You’ll play a key role in delivering process engineering design content for water engineering projects, including wastewater and water reuse, both in the UK and globally. Your responsibilities will span from feasibility and optioneering to detailed design for procurement, construction, and supplier proposal review.

Working in multidisciplinary project teams, you’ll support the delivery of effective engineering solutions for high-profile clients.


Key Responsibilities

  • Produce process design deliverables such as:

    • Optioneering studies
    • Process calculations, mass balances
    • Process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs)
    • Sketches and basis of design reports
    • Ensure optimum technical solutions for projects
  • Conduct outline or detailed process engineering design

  • Facilitate site visits for data acquisition and operator meetings

  • Provide technical input during procurement processes

  • Support Project Managers in client discussions

  • Engage with technology providers and vendors

  • Participate in safety reviews (HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, SWIFT)

  • Offer technical coaching and supervision for junior staff

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, integrating process engineering into overall engineering projects while meeting time, cost, and quality goals
  • Contribute to proposals, work scopes, schedules, and budgets
  • Maintain client liaison to confirm their requirements are met

Requirements

We seek candidates who demonstrate:

✔ Proven experience in delivering process engineering design for infrastructure projects, including leading critical tasks or projects ✔ Municipal water industry expertise

✔ Ability to work independently on deliverables such as:

  • Technical specifications, calculations, reports, datasheets, and procurement documentation
  • Process control philosophies, P&IDs, and mass balances

✔ Experience in wastewater treatment solutions, including:

  • Primary, secondary, and advanced treatments (filtration, clarification, chemical dosing, nitrogen/phosphorus removal, activated sludge, MBBR, MBR, etc.)
  • Circular economy and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) concepts

✔ Familiarity with consultancy or engineering environments, previously acting as a Process Engineer ✔ Strong ability to produce high-quality technical reports and deliver clear, professional presentations

✔ Excellent communication skills:

  • Engages in professional, articulate discussions with clients, colleagues, and vendors
  • Leads multi-disciplinary meetings, both remote and in-person
  • Acts as a technical representative for external stakeholders

✔ Willingness to travel for site visits, assess process performance, and comply with health and safety protocols
