Principal / Associate Wastewater Process Engineer

Job Title: Associate Waste Water Process Engineer

Location: Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle or Glasgow

About the Role…

At WSP, you can design a career as unique as you—and make meaningful progress on projects that matter.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Associate Waste Water Process Engineer to join our Water Engineering teams. You’ll play a pivotal role in process engineering design for wastewater and water reuse projects across the UK and globally.

Working within multidisciplinary project teams, you’ll contribute to project design stages—from feasibility and optioneering to detailed designs for procurement, construction, and procurement reviews. As an expert in waste water processes, you’ll help deliver exceptional services for high-profile clients while supporting junior staff, driving technical excellence, and collaborating with a range of disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce process design deliverables, including:

    • Optioneering studies
    • Process calculations and mass balance
    • Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs)
    • Sketches and basis of design reports
    • Ensure optimised solutions for each project
  • Lead outlier or detailed process engineering design.

  • Conduct site visits to acquire data and engage with operators.

  • Provide technical input for procurement, vendor relationships, and client discussions.

  • Attend technical reviews such as:

    • HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies)
    • HAZID (Hazard Identification)
    • ENVID (Environmental Impact Assessments)
    • SWIFT (Systematic Playing Out Workshops)
  • Offer technical guidance, mentorship, and supervision to junior engineers.

  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure integrated design that meets quality, cost, and timeline expectations.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
