Principal / Associate Wastewater Process Engineer
Associate Waste Water Process Engineer – Water Engineering Teams (Locations: Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Glasgow)

About the Role
As demand for our expertise rises, we seek an experienced Associate Waste Water Process Engineer to join our Water Engineering teams across key UK locations. You’ll play a crucial role in shaping design deliverables for wastewater and water reuse projects—from feasibility studies to detailed engineering—working in multidisciplinary project teams and contributing to high-profile client projects.
Key Responsibilities
You will collaborate closely with project teams to deliver effective and innovative engineering solutions. Key activities include:

Process Design Deliverables
- Produce process flow diagrams (P&IDs), mass balance calculations, instrumentation and piping drawings, basis of design reports, and sketches to optimise project solutions.
- undertake outline or detailed process engineering design for wastewater treatment and reuse systems.

Site Engagement & Inspection
- Participate in site visits for data collection and discussions with operations teams.
- Assess existing and new process performance during site visits.

Technical & Client-Facing Roles
- Provide technical input during procurement processes and evaluate supplier proposals.
- Support Project Managers in discussions with clients, ensuring alignment on project requirements.
- Engage with technology vendors to assess innovations and best-fit solutions.

Safety & Risk Management
- Contribute to HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID (Environment, Noise, Dust, Impact) studies, and SWIFT (Suppliers Without Financial Trouble) evaluations.

Security & Auditing
- Offer technical guidance and supervision for junior engineers.
- Lead ** propoals writing**, scoping, scheduling, and budgeting inputs.

Collaboration & Integration
- Ensure seamless integration of process engineering designs across multidisciplinary teams.
- Work within time, cost, and quality constraints to deliver collaborative projects.

What We’re Looking For
We welcome candidates who demonstrate any of the following key qualifications and experiences:
Technical & Industry Expertise
- 5+ years of experience in process engineering design for infrastructure projects, preferably leading process aspects in municipal wastewater, water reuse, or industrial wastewater solutions.
- Hands-on experience with tertiary treatments:
- Filtration, clarification, chemical dosing, phosphorus removal (P removal), Activated Sludge Process (ASP), Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), Membrane Bioreactors (MBR), and other advanced biological treatments.
- Strong understanding of circular economy principles and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technologies.
- Prior experience in consultancy, engineering companies, or related industrial sectors.
Professional Skills & Attitude
- Self-supervised excellence: Ability to independently prepare/review deliverables (e.g., technical specifications, reports, P&IDs, mass balances, procurement documentation).
- Reactive commercial mindset: Experience with feasibility studies, concept designs, Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), and detailed design.
- Excellent written & verbal communication with fluency to present to various stakeholders (senior colleagues, clients, and contractors).
- Leadership & stakeholder management: Proven track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams, harmonising inputs, and taking ownership in client-facing discussions.
- Technical mentorship: Willingness to meet junior staff needs through guidance, training, and oversight.
Behavior & Commercial Flexibility
- Consultative demeanour: Adaptability to listen, analyse, and synthesise client needs across diverse industries.
- Travel compatibility: Willingness to visit sites for optimal project execution and performance audits.
- Innovation mind-set: Ability to drive efficient, forward-thinking solutions whilst working in a fast-moving consultancy environment.
