Principal Civil Engineer - Manchester (Hybrid Working) Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to join a well-established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy based in Manchester. This is a senior technical role offering the opportunity to lead the design and delivery of a diverse portfolio of building and infrastructure projects across multiple sectors.

The successful candidate will play a key role within a collaborative design team, providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, managing client relationships, and ensuring projects are delivered to the highest technical standards, on time and within budget.

The Role: As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise throughout all stages of the design process while supporting the continued growth of the business. Working alongside architects, structural engineers, building services engineers and external stakeholders, you will lead the delivery of innovative and practical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the civil and structural engineering design of building and infrastructure projects from concept through to completion.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Prepare specifications, calculations, reports, drawings and contract documentation in accordance with current legislation and industry standards.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and statutory regulations.
  • Manage project budgets, resources and programmes to achieve successful project delivery.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and external design teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify project risks, variations and scope changes, ensuring effective change control.
  • Represent the business at client meetings, technical reviews and external stakeholder meetings.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, providing technical leadership and guidance.
  • Contribute to business development by identifying new opportunities and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies, legislation and best practice within the civil and structural engineering sector.

We're looking for an experienced engineer who combines strong technical capability with excellent leadership and communication skills.

You will have:

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Extensive experience delivering civil and structural engineering projects within the built environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge across all stages of the design process.
  • Experience working on projects ranging from small refurbishments to large-scale developments.
  • The ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate project delivery.
  • Excellent problem-solving, planning and organisational skills.
  • Strong client-facing experience and the ability to build lasting professional relationships.
  • Experience managing project budgets, resources and programmes.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status, or actively working towards Chartership.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (such as ICE, IStructE, CIBSE or similar).
  • Knowledge of complementary disciplines including fire engineering, acoustics and digital modelling.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and other industry-standard design software.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Full UK driving licence.
