Principal Civil Engineer - Cheltenham

I'm currently working with a well-established and growing multidisciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy that is looking to appoint a Principal Civil Engineer to join its expanding team in Cheltenham.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Civil Engineer who is looking to take on a senior technical and leadership role within a collaborative and forward-thinking business. You'll be joining a highly regarded team delivering a diverse range of infrastructure and development projects, while playing a key role in mentoring junior engineers and supporting business growth.

The Role

As Principal Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for leading projects from inception through to completion, ensuring delivery to the highest technical and commercial standards.


Key Responsibilities Include

  • Managing a range of civil engineering projects from concept through to implementation.
  • Supporting the day-to-day management of a team of engineers, including resource planning and timesheet approvals.
  • Liaising with clients, stakeholders, local authorities and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Undertaking site visits and providing technical oversight.
  • Supporting senior leadership with project finances, fee proposals and commercial management.
  • Preparing Drainage Strategies and engineering reports to support planning applications.
  • Producing and reviewing technical designs including:
    • Highway designs
    • Drainage designs
    • External works packages
    • Ground modelling
    • S104, S278 and S38 submissions
  • Managing the approval and negotiation process with relevant authorities.
  • Contributing to business development activities and client relationship management.
  • Mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior team members.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven experience delivering civil engineering projects within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of infrastructure design and drainage strategies.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and detailed design packages.
  • A solid understanding of S104, S278 and S38 agreements.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Previous experience mentoring or managing junior engineers.
  • A proactive and commercial approach to project delivery and client development.
