Principal Clinical Psychologist
Climatica and Palliative Care Psychology Service – Leadership Role
Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist to take on an important part-time leadership role within our Cancer and Palliative Care Psychology Service.
This role will appeal to you if you have:
- A keen interest in embedding psychological knowledge and skills across the healthcare system, for the benefit of our key stakeholders
- Enthusiasm for working both directly with service users and in a leadership capacity
- Strong connections to health psychology, Welsh psychology services, third sector organisations, and doctoral training courses
Main Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Provide psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions to service users
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance equitable service access and ensure quality improvements
- Lead service development, consultation, teaching, and support for colleagues
- Promote continuing professional development, research activity, and trainee support
** Leadership and Governance**
- Hold responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the team, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures
- Supervise up to Senior-level staff, including appraisals, Informed End of Career Reviews (PADRs), and informal grievances
- Develop local policies and procedures to improve service quality
- Offer clinical mentorship and placements for trainee clinical psychologists

Research and Advisory Role
- Utilise research expertise for audit, policy, and service development
- Serve on recruitment panels for designated staff roles
- Assist in the day-to-day management of the service in collaboration with senior teams
Language
- Desirable: Experience or ability to speak Welsh.
- Preferred: Applications may be submitted in Welsh (not disadvantaged compared to English submissions).

Detailed Job Responsibilities
- Deliver highly specialised clinical psychology services, including assessment and therapy, to service users
- Work autonomously in accordance with:
- The British Psychological Society’s Code of Conduct
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) guidelines
- Ensure quality assurance through delegated management responsibilities, including supervision structure and staff support

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
(Professional Registration & Qualifications)
- HCPC registration obtained
(Experience)
- Experience working with physical health condition presentations as a qualified clinical psychologist
(Supervision Skills)
- Experience supervising non-psychologist colleagues
(Teaching & Training)
- Experience in teaching and training non-psychologist colleagues
(Service Development & Improvement)
- Evidence of service development and improvement achievements
Desirable Criteria
- Post-qualification training in clinical supervision
- Professional involvement in formal skill development areas, such as (e.g., the Belonging: Qualities in Training (BQT) programmes or existing BCUHB frameworks)
- Publication or dissemination of research findings
