Principal Clinical Psychologist

Job Overview

Are you an experienced Clinical Psychologist seeking a leadership role where you can shape clinical practice, supervise and support colleagues, and drive service development across a forward-thinking CAMHS team?

As the Principal Clinical Psychologist, you will play a key role in the development, provision, evaluation, and governance of psychological interventions within CAMHS.

Main Duties of the Job

As the Principal Clinical Psychologist, you will:

  • Play a key role in the development, provision, evaluation, and governance of psychological interventions within our CAMHS team.
  • Work closely with the Consultant Psychologist and service leads to provide clinical leadership within the MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team).
  • Influence service development, guide complex case decisions, and collaborate with multi-agency colleagues to enhance care.
  • Work within strong peer networks within Child Psychology and maintain close links to the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme.

Detailed Person Specification

Qualifications/Knowledge

Essential criteria:

  • A good Honours Degree in Psychology.
  • Eligibility for British Psychological Society Chartered status.
  • A post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), accredited by the British Psychological Society.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist.
  • Completion of clinical supervision training for supervising Doctoral trainees.
  • Doctoral-level advanced specialist knowledge of:
    • Clinical psychology theory and practice.
    • Psychological therapies and their application.
    • Neuropsychological and psychometric assessment and interpretation.
  • Doctoral-level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis within clinical psychology.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for clinical practice and professional management.

Desirable criteria:

  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in difficult-to-treat groups (e.g., personality disorder, dual diagnoses, individuals with additional disabilities).
  • Knowledge of advanced psychological interventions and assessment methodologies.
  • A recognised qualification in supervision.
  • A record of publications in peer-reviewed academic or professional journals and/or books.

Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Substantial assessed experience as a qualified and senior clinical psychologist, with significant post-qualification experience in this CAMHS speciality.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical supervision of trainee Doctoral psychologists or an equivalent accredited by the Director of Psychology.
  • Extensive experience in specialised psychological assessment and treatment across diverse care settings.
  • Experience working with client groups across a wide range of clinical severities.
  • Full responsibility for client psychological care, including multi-disciplinary care planning.
  • Track record in teaching, training, and professional/clinical supervision.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience applying clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience representing clinical psychology in multi-disciplinary care.
  • Experience managing qualified clinical psychologists and support staff.

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria:

  • The ability to demonstrate a high level of competence in this speciality.
  • Strong supervision skills, including supervising Trainee Clinical Psychologists.
  • Highly developed communication skills for explaining complex, clinically sensitive information to clients, families, carers, and professional colleagues.
  • Strong consultation skills for multidisciplinary and non-professional audiences.
  • Professionalism and safe clinical practice in emotionally demanding environments.
  • Ability to provide support to line-managed staff facing highly distressing cases and behaviours.
  • Proficiency in using complex multimedia for teaching, training, and assessment.
  • Effective workload management when managing competing demands.
  • Collaborative skills to work with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

Basic IT skills required (e.g., Microsoft Office).

Desirable criteria:

  • Ability to speak Welsh.
  • Advanced IT skills, such as data analysis tools.
  • Leadership and management expertise.
