Senior Clinical Psychologist – Acute Care Mental Health Unit (Heddfan Psychiatric Unit, Wrexham Maelor Hospital)
Job Overview
This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to adults in acute care mental health services in North Wales.
This senior post provides psychological input and oversight in acute care psychology services at Heddfan Psychiatric Unit, Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Key Aims
- Provide psychological leadership for the continued development and delivery of a biopsychosocial MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) for acute care and MDT interventions within adult mental health inpatient settings
- Lead expert advice, consultation, training, and supervision in psychological approaches tailored to acute care pathways
- Offer direct psychological interventions, staff training, support, and supervision along the acute care pathway and inpatient adult mental health units
- Deliver direct clinical psychological input to service users and families
The role offers professional and line management support within a friendly and growing AMH (Adult Mental Health) Clinical Psychology & Psychological Services Department.
Note: There is an option to combine this role with the concurrently advertised Older Adult Mental Health Acute Care Principal Clinical Psychologist posts. Please inquire if interested.
Main Duties
- Be an active and integrated member of the inpatient multidisciplinary mental health team
- Provide a highly specialised clinical psychology service, including:
- Specialised psychological assessment and therapy for clients
- Consultation to staff for case management support
- Work autonomously, adhering to:
- The British Psychological Society Code of Conduct, Ethical Principles and Guidelines 2004
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulations
- Plan and deliver individual and group interventions, including MDT-led guidance
- Work with complex adult mental health cases in an inpatient setting, covering:
- Specialist neuropsychological assessments
- Case formulation
- Individual/group interventions
- Act as a clinical leader, promoting excellence in:
- Specialist assessment
- Formulation and evidence-based interventions
- Advisory support for complex cases
- Serve as a highly specialised resource to the wider professional community

Person Specification
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential Criteria
- Degree in Psychology (honours level)
- Eligibility for BPS Chartered status
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent for professionals trained pre-1996)
- Registration with the HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist
Desirable Criteria
- Advanced knowledge of psychological therapies for difficult-to-treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, additional disabilities)
- Expertise in specialist psychological assessment and intervention methodologies, including neuropsychological evaluation
Experience
Essential Criteria
- Substantial post-qualification experience as a senior clinical psychologist, preferably within the inpatient acute care sector
- Demonstrated expertise in specialist multidisciplinary settings
- Extensive supervision and formal training as a specialist Clinical Psychologist
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in culturally diverse contexts
- Experience representing psychology in multidisciplinary teams
Aptitudes & Abilities
Essential Criteria
- Competency at doctoral level in research design and methodology (particularly in clinical psychology and multivariate data analysis)
Desirable Criteria
- Ability to speak Welsh
