Acute Care Principal Clinical Psychologist – Heddfan Psychiatric Unit, North Wales

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the transformation of acute care mental health services for adults in North Wales.

As Principal Clinical Psychologist for Heddfan Psychiatric Unit (Wrexham Maelor Hospital), you will:

  • Provide psychological leadership for the development and delivery of a biopsychosocial multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach in acute care settings.
  • Offer specialist input, consultation, training, and supervision in psychological approaches within inpatient adult mental health units.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based interventions tailored to the acute care pathway.
  • Provide expert psychological assessments and direct clinical interventions for service users and their families.

You will work collaboratively with a friendly and growing AMH Clinical Psychology & Psychological Services Department, offering professional support and line management guidance.

Potential for role including the concurrently advertised Older Adult Mental Health Acute Care Principal Clinical Psychologist post – interested candidates should inquire.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Act as an active and integrated member of the inpatient multidisciplinary mental health team.
  • Provide specialised clinical psychology services, including:
    • Psychological assessments (including neuropsychological evaluations).
    • Formulation, therapeutic interventions, and case management for complex adult mental health presentations.
    • Consultation and supervision to support multidisciplinary staff.
  • Deliver individual and group interventions, both directly and through MDT collaboration.
  • Work autonomously in line with British Psychological Society (BPS) Ethical Guidelines and HCPC registration requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Good Honours degree in Psychology.
  • Eligibility for BPS Chartered status.
  • Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent, pre-1996) accredited by the British Psychological Society.
  • Full registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Psychologist.

Desirable Criteria

  • Advanced knowledge of specialised psychological therapies for difficult-to-treat groups, including:
    • Personality disorder.
    • Dual diagnoses.
    • Clients with additional disabilities.
  • Expertise in neuropsychological assessments and highly specialised evidence-based methodologies.

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Substantial post-qualification experience as a qualified clinical psychologist, with a specialist focus in designated areas (acute care/​inpatient adult mental health).
  • Established track record in:
    • Effective MDT collaboration.
    • Complex case management with ** ofrecered clinical supervision**.
  • Demonstrated ability work within the ACCR standards and specialist mental health settings.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience delivering clinical psychology in culturally diverse contexts.
  • Experience representing psychology teams within multidisciplinary environments.

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential Criteria

  • Doctoral-level understanding of research design and multivariate data analysis relevant to clinical contexts.
  • High competence in applied psychological practices for complex mental health needs.

Desirable Criteria

  • Proficiency in Welsh.
