Senior Clinical Psychologist – Acute Older Adult Psychology Services

CRUHB North Wales

Job Overview

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in acute Older Adult functional and dementia inpatient care in North Wales.

This senior post focuses on providing psychological leadership and oversight in acute care Older Adult psychology services across BCUHB East. The role involves:

  • Leading the development and delivery of a biopsychosocial multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach in acute Older Adult functional and dementia care.
  • Overseeing MDT interventions in inpatient dementia care settings.
  • Providing expert consultation, training, supervision in psychological approaches within acute care pathways.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering psychological interventions, behavioural and neuropsychological assessments.
  • Supporting staff training, support, and supervision in the Older Adult dementia care pathway (Wrexham & Flintshire).
  • Offering direct clinical psychological input to service users and families.

There is the potential to combine this post with concurrently advertised Adult Mental Health Acute Care Principal Clinical Psychologist roles (inquire if interested).


Main Duties

Required responsibilities:

  • Act as an active and integrated member of the inpatient multidisciplinary mental health team.
  • Provide a specialised clinical psychology service, including:
    • Psychological assessments and therapy for complex clients.
    • Consultation to staff on best practices.
  • Work autonomously in compliance with:
    • The British Psychological Society Code of Conduct, Ethical Principles and Guidelines (2004)
    • Health and Care Professions Council standards.
  • Plan and deliver individual and group interventions, directly or via MDT guidance.
  • Manage a specialist clinical psychology caseload in inpatient settings, including:
    • Neuropsychological assessments
    • Formulation and evidence-based interventions
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership through:
    • Advancing excellence in assessment, formulation, and intervention.
    • Providing expert advice in complex cases to other professionals.
  • Serve as a key resource for broader multidisciplinary teams.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential:

  • Good Honours degree in Psychology.
  • Eligible for BPS Chartered status.
  • Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent for pre-1996 qualifications).
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist. Desirable:
  • Advanced knowledge of specialist psychological therapies (e.g., for personality disorders, dual diagnoses, complex neurodivergence).
  • Expertise in neuropsychological assessment methodologies.

Experience

Essential:

  • Substantial senior clinical psychology experience, including specialised post-qualification experience inhouse or relevant transferable skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a senior-level clinical psychologist in geriatric/dementia settings or a comparable field.
  • Extensive clinical supervision or equivalent leadership in specialist practice (approved by the Director of Psychology). Desirable:
  • Experience working in culturally diverse settings.
  • Background in multidisciplinary team collaboration.

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential:

  • Proven competence at senior level in the designated speciality.
  • Doctoral-level research skills (multivariate data analysis, research design). Desirable:
  • Bilingual in Welsh – a bonus for working in North Wales.
